Self-Discipline & God’s Grace The Recipe for Self-control God’s grace and self-discipline enables us to practice self-control, which is essential to every part of a Christian’s life. Galatians 5:22-23

The choice to deny self is the very first choice a disciple must make (Mark 8:34) Master your moods: Proverbs 25:28 “Whoever has no rule over his own spirit Is like a city broken down, without walls.” Bridle your tongue: Proverbs 13:3 “He who guards his mouth preserves his life, But he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction.” Regulate your wrath: Proverbs 19:11 “The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger, And his glory is to overlook a transgression.”

The choice to deny self is the very first choice a disciple must make (Mark 8:34) Control your calendar: Ephesians 5:15-16 “See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” Manage your money: Proverbs 21:20 “There is desirable treasure, And oil in the dwelling of the wise, But a foolish man squanders it.” Possess your passions: 1 Thessalonians 4:4 “…each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor.”

Self-evident Truths About Self-disciplined People They are better at avoiding temptation and more satisfied with their lives. They enjoy conquering themselves. They are better at setting boundaries. They enjoy life more and do more of what they actually want to do with their lives. They get better through practice. (1 Timothy 4:7-8)

Winning the War to Control Yourself All of us can identify with Paul’s war within (Romans 7:15-25; 8:1, 5-14) He can only win through Christ as he walks according to the Spirit! “Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish” (Galatians 5:16-17) Self-satisfaction is the enemy of self-control (Philippians 3:12-14)

Self-discipline Is A Form Of Freedom Freedom from laziness and lethargy Freedom from slavery to others’ expectations Freedom from weakness, fear, and doubt. Self-discipline is the freedom to attain. The freedom to finish. The freedom to be victorious. “Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable… I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.” (1 Corinthians 9:25, 27)
