See binder, usb, workshop program page Follow-up & Overview Road check follow-up Added to links to program page with tool/tips on making your own Google Earth resources Today Explore Resources Activity 2: Explore A Virtual Marine Sediment Core Collection Activity 3: Explore A Grand Tour of the Ocean Basins Opportunity to Create/Adapt assignments that use these or yesterday’s resources Work individually or in small groups See binder, usb, workshop program page

Activity 2. A Virtual Marine Sediment Core Collection Tour a set of 8 exemplars of ocean sediment lithologies: Virtual_Core_Collection_06-08-19.kmz  Compare and contrast to resources in Activity 1 Discuss use of this resource in the development of assignments on marine sedimentology. Examine physical marine sediment samples and learn how to make your own sample request for education (or research) use from IODP https://serc.carleton.edu/earth_rendezvous/2019/program/morning_workshops/w10/program.html

Making a sample request…. See example physical samples Making a sample request…. What do you want samples for? Education (e.g., use in class, lab) Research (student research that you mentor, your own) What do you want to do with the samples? Composition work (smear slides, XRD….) Grain size Other… Can request hard rock samples too Where do you want samples from? Look at suggested sites - spreadsheet on USB, and in binder Use Activity 2 Part 3 to explore sites or IODP site map to explore sites Dig deeper - access expedition reports

Making a sample request…. Use link on Workshop program page Making a sample request….

Activity 3. A Virtual Marine Sediment Core Collection Tour a number of sites illustrating tectonic processes and ocean basin geometries grand_tour_ocean_basins_kmzl.kml  Discuss use of this resource in the development of assignments on (e.g.): the tectonic life cycle of an ocean basin, comparisons of processes, rates, and seafloor features associated with fast and slow spreading centers, simple vs. complex plate motion geometries, and comparisons of hot spot and plate boundary features. https://serc.carleton.edu/earth_rendezvous/2019/program/morning_workshops/w10/program.html
