Presentation transcript:

The teacher acts as a mediator, and the effectiveness of innovations very much depends on the teacher making proper use of them. The teacher is at the epicentre of the learning process; and learning therefore depends first and foremost on the quality of the teacher. - (Schwille et al. 2007:15)

If we create a culture where every teacher believes they need to improve, not because they are not good enough but because they can be even better, there is no limit to what we can achieve. (Dylan William)

The Outline of my Presentation (hopefully in 10 minutes...) Definition of Continuous Professional Development Benefits Approaches Modals of PD

Definition of CPD CPD is a planned, continuous and lifelong process whereby teachers try to develop their personal and professional qualities, and to improve their knowledge, skills and practice, leading to their empowerment, the improvement of their agency and the development of their organisation and their students. (Padwad and Dixit, 2011:10)

Another Definition of CPD Professional development consists of all natural learning experiences and those conscious and planned activities which are intended to be of direct or indirect benefit to the individual, group or school, which contribute, through these, to the quality of education in the classroom. It is the process by which, alone and with others, teachers review, renew and extend their commitment as change agents to the moral purpose of teaching; and by which they acquire and develop critically the knowledge, skills and emotional intelligence essential to good professional thinking, planning and practice with children, young people and colleagues throughout each phase of their teaching lives. (Day, 1999: 4)

Our Definition of CPD Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for teachers is described as a process in which teachers are provided with the opportunities to refresh and enhance their skills throughout their professional lives; CPD helps teachers develop and evolve their knowledge, skills and behaviours and it leads to the improvement of the organisation and the success of the students (Prince, E., Barret, A. 2014; Padwad, A., Dixit, K. 2011:10).

CPD ACTIVITIES Contributing as well as receiving; Active as well as passive; On your own time as well as in work hours; All the activities that help teacher improve & broaden their knowledge & skills.

Benefits of CPD Successful changes in teachers’ practice; School improvement ; Student improvement (Bolam and Weindling, 2006); Enhanced collaboration; Confidence and other affective benefits along with the professional ones. Taking the needs of teachers into consideration along with the needs of the organisation.
