Bell Ringer Today is a journal day. Write in complete sentences and be sure to write QUALITY answers. Don’t stop writing until I say time is up. What is your dream for the future? Be as specific as possible. Don’t hold back! This is your DREAM.

Objective Objective: I can cite evidence to support my claim.

Review When we answer text-dependent questions, we need to use evidence to support our answer. On Tuesday, we will begin looking at how to C.C.C. (claim, cite, clarify) but today, we will be starting that with claim and cite. let’s look at my example again!

Further explain your claim as needed. Model Question: Why does Sinclair use personification to bring to light the struggles of immigrants in America? restate the question Claim: Sinclair uses personification to show the struggles immigrants endure through bringing their dreams to life. He does this because he wants to show how their hopes for a good future have been destroyed by these terrible working and living conditions. Cite: For example, Sinclair writes, “old joys would stretch out their arms to them, old hopes and dreams would call to them, and they would stir beneath the burden that lay upon them, and feel its forever immeasurable weight”(Sinclair 2). answer the question Further explain your claim as needed. introduce the quote Use quotation marks cite your source

Your task today: Read page 3 of chapter 14 of “The Jungle.” Complete the TDQ’s on the next page using a claim and a cite. Go on to clarify if you have extra time.

Text Dependent Questions Why does Jurgis drink? Why does Jurgis resent his family at times?

Keep these questions. We’ll be using them next week for our C.C.C.’s. To Close: Keep these questions. We’ll be using them next week for our C.C.C.’s.
