Warm up A car is about 15% efficient at converting energy from gas to energy of motion. The average car gets 25 miles per gallon. a.What would the car’s gas mileage be made if it was 100% efficient? b.Name three things that contribute to lost energy and prevent a car from ever being 100% efficient

Energy Key Question: What is the relationship between speed and the height of a falling object?

What is energy? Energy is the ability to do work. Any object with energy can create force that is capable of acting over a distance. What are some examples?

What are some of the ways energy can travel? Light, Sound, Electricity, etc …

What unit do we use to measure energy? Joules Energy = Stored Work

What do we call the energy of motion? Kinetic energy (Ek) Ek = ½ mv2 m = mass v = speed

What is the relationship between speed and the height of a falling object? Potential energy (Ep) Ep = mgh m = mass g = force of gravity h = height

What is the Law of conservation of energy? Nature never creates or destroys energy; energy only gets converted from one form to another.

Transfer of heat energy Conduction – energy is transferred through matter by the collisions of atoms. This form of transfer requires contact such as a pan on the stove. Convection- transfer of energy by the circulation of a gas or liquid

Transfer of heat energy

Transfer of heat energy Infrared radiation -The hotter an object is, the more infrared radiation it gives off. No particles are involved in radiation. This means that thermal energy transfer by radiation can even work in space, but conduction and convection cannot.
