Environmental Issues in Europe

What is a fossil fuel? A natural fuel such as coal or gas, formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms.

What are fossil fuels used for? Fossil fuels are found in almost every product we use daily. One major use of these products is as fuel, gasoline for cars, jet fuel (airplanes), heating oil and natural gas used to generate electricity. https://www.iagc.org › importance-of-fossil-fuels https://www.slideshare.net/ddertili/fossil-fuels-by-students-kasioum-iand-dritsoula

So what’s so bad about using fossil fuels? Using fossil fuels can cause air and water pollution, and harm local communities. Transporting fuels from the mine or well can cause air pollution and lead to serious accidents and spills. When the fuels are burned, they emit toxins and global warming emissions. https://www.ucsusa.org

Air pollution in the United Kingdom

Air pollution in the United Kingdom Burning fossil fuels causes air pollution. Air pollution is a problem around the world. In the United Kingdom, air pollution has caused respiratory problems, heart and lung disease, asthma, and premature death. Air pollution has a negative impact on humans.

Comprehension check Answer questions on a separate piece of paper. What are fossil fuels? What are fossil fuels used for? How is using and burning fossil fuels harmful to humans?

Acid Rain in Germany Acid rain is caused by air pollution. As pollution gets into the air, it mixes with the water in the clouds. When it rains or snows, the dirty pollution falls to the ground in the rain. This dirty rain gets into rivers, and streams and effects wildlife. Acid rain can cause erosion on buildings and statues. Acid rain is a type of chemical weathering (which you will learn about in Science). Acid rain has caused damage to the Black Forest in Germany.
