Elements of Design Any garment has 5 elements of design: Line Shape Space Texture Color
Elements of Design Line: Illusion-an image that fools the eye Examples: stripes on a shirt, creases in a pleated skirt, seams on a pair of jeans Illusion-an image that fools the eye
Elements of Design Line Directs the eye Can emphasize features
Elements of Design Line Vertical lines-lead the eye up and down Horizontal lines-lead the eye from side to side Waistbands, belts, wide horizontal stripes
Elements of Design Shape-the outline of a garment Inverted triangle-a dress that is loose and full at the top and narrow at the bottom A-line shape (triangle)-a dress that is fitted on top and fuller on the bottom T shape-a shirt that hangs straight from the shoulders creates a boxy shape

Elements of Design Space-the entire area within a garment Pockets, seams, button, and trim
Elements of Design Texture-the way the surface of a fabric looks and feels Satin-smooth and slippery texture; reflect light Formal occasions, dressy Denim-rough and rugged Casual Corduroy-ribbed and bulky Wool-bulky
Color Hue-a specific color name Primary colors-red, yellow, and blue Green, red, blue Color wheel is made up of basic hues Primary colors-red, yellow, and blue
Color Secondary colors-created when two primary colors are mixed
Color Value-the lightness or darkness of a color Shade-adding black to a color Tint-adding white to a color Intensity-the brightness or dullness of a color
Color Schemes Monochromatic-uses tints and shades of only one color
Color Schemes Analogous-uses two or more colors that are next to each other on the color wheel
Color Schemes Complementary-color that are direct opposites on the color wheel
Color Schemes Split-complimentary-uses one color along with the two colors on each side of its complimentary color
Color Schemes Triadic-any three colors that are an equal distance apart on the color wheel
Principles of Design Proportion Balance Rhythm Emphasis Emphasis and Proportion are associated with clothing
Principles of Design Emphasis-draws attention to the point of greatest interest Line, color, and texture can be used to create emphasis
Principles of Design Proportion-the way one part of a design relates in size, shape, or space to another part and to the whole design

Then write a description of what you would wear to each interview and how you used the elements and principles of design to help you in making your decisions.
