Mrs. Jones-Clyne 8th Grade Reading

My Goals To help make students stronger readers across all academic classes To give students the academic and social skills needed to be a successful 8th grader. To increase student Lexile scores for college and career readiness. To provide a safe, supportive, comfortable, and fun classroom environment To help students discover new interests and develop them

Pick on day of the week to check the Parent Vue Pick on day of the week  to check the Parent Vue. Look for notes about your child's behavior and grades.  Grades are placed in the grade book 1-5 days after the student takes the formative or summative.   Talk your child before emailing the teacher. I encourage the students to email me. As they move  to the high school setting, they will be expected to communicate with the teacher themselves ( Practice Adulting). Grades move up and down each time a grade is entered. I suggest you check grades on Wednesday or Thursdays. Parent Vue

Absent – time make up work will be same number of days absent. Students are expected to check the blog before returning to class. Check the while you were out folder. If you don't find what you need see the teacher before or after class.

Independent Daily Reading/Journal Prompts - During this time students are engaged in self-selected texts at their independent level.  They use this time to practice the skills that are taught during the mini-lessons. Mini Lesson to introduce and instruct (model) a specific reading strategy or skill (I Do) Together, the students and I practice the strategy or skill (We Do) Students then get a chance to practice the strategy or skill on their own or with a partner (You Do)  Closing – Summary/ exit tickets/ thumbs up/down A Day 8th Grade Reading

Controlled and varied sentence structure. 1 and ½ paragraphs Few errors in grammar or mechanics; some varied sentence structure. 1 paragraph Some errors in grammar and mechanics; Simplistic an awkward sentence structure. Less than on paragraph Many errors in grammar and mechanics ( i.e sentence structure which makes it difficult to determine what the write means.

Re-Testing Procedure Effective 2nd Quarter Certain tasks must be completed prior to the original assessment to earn an opportunity to take a re-test regardless of the students performance. (I.E practice/homework, study guides) Students will be ineligible to re-test if they do not complete required remediation work. The tasks that are required will be communicated. (I.E Remind 101, Parent vue, Blog, etc.) Effective (2nd Semester) 8th Grade students will be allowed to choose 1 summative per quarter to re-test.   Reasoning: Data has reflected very minimal, if any, improvement in scores when students are not required to complete the supplementary work prior to the original test. Although, they still have to complete remediation assignments after the original test in order to re-test, it’s a much smaller window for preparation. In addition, we are meticulous in our opportunities to prepare and support our students vertically for high school. Re-Testing Procedure
