Types Of Essays Expository Persuasive Explains, defines, or interprets a given subject Also includes compare/contrast essays Persuasive Tries to convince the reader about an idea Must be a clearly-focused argument for one side of the issue

Essay Competition Online 50 minutes to pre-write, plan, organize, draft, and write a final draft Choice of three prompts might be on any subject area: art, music, literature, science, social science, etc.

Step 1: Reading the Prompt ANSWER THE ENTIRE PROMPT! Every prompt contains: Issue: the subject or topic Purpose: what the completed essay should do Persuade Explain Defend Task: how the essay should complete the purpose Analyze the different sides of an issue Compare and contrast two issues or topics Cite examples to support your position No more than 5 minutes

Step 2: Plan/Prewrite Decide on a position Determine evidence to support your position Collect, list, and organize ideas to use in the essay 10 minutes You might use: brainstorming mapping jot list graphic organizer

Evaluate… Does the plan include ALL content required by the prompt? Are the ideas appropriate and fully developed with specific details, examples, etc.? Are the introduction and conclusion approximately the same length and quality without repetition?

Step 3: Writing the Essay Introduction Strong lead Clear, focused thesis statement Body Clear and focused Ideas are supported with evidence Conclusion Leaves the reader with the idea or impression you want to leave 30 minutes

Step 4: Revising, Editing, & Proofreading Reread what you have written Make any necessary changes Reread after making changes one more time Look at: Effectiveness -- support and evidence Clarity and focus Completion of the entire prompt Conventions, language, etc. 5 minutes

Online Essay Specifics Arrive at least 15-25 minutes before competition (you cannot log on early) If you are late, you do NOT receive extra time. Use Internet Explorer or newest version of Chrome ONLY – no other screens or programs may be open during testing Entire team must write at the same time

Social Science Prompt #4 The founding of the Indian National Army (INA) was very historical. According to my resources, the army was created because they were in dire need of an army to protect themselves from other enemy countries. They needed to protect their borders, their people, and their economy. The first INA was in peril. The failed INA was disbanded and never formed again til the next 5 years. INA began in India. It is very important.

Literature Prompt #6 Nationalism, how could one describe it? It could be the pure dedication to your country, or the heart of a true resident who believes their country could do no wrong. Or it could be where you were born or raised. An nationalistic American would be considered as a GOD fearing, justice seeking, army supporting resident. That’s the American way! But, we’re not here to talk about America. We’re here to talk about India.

Continued… When you think of Indians what do you picture? A Native American man hunting buffalo? Or are you a bit more educated and invision a darker skinned person with nice hair? Both are stereotypes either way. India is home to millions of people. It’s great wheather and variety of foods brings thousands every year just to visit. Anyone would be happy to claim it as their home. India is also home to thousands of popular movies.

Science Prompt #6 I have no idea what this essay should be about so I’m just going to write about risk. Risk is leaving the rest of this essay blank and hoping for a good score.

Advice From a Former Competitor… A first year decathlete that got way in over their head paper is in your mists. I most definantly understimated what being in Academic Decathlon would mean for my usual work ethic, where I can just use what i know from my common knowledge and common sense and a whole lot of winging it, to glid by in my studies – since i can pick things up fairly quickly, depending on the level of difficulty, in say a matter of a day or two days tops.
