Beyond Death’s Door Body, Soul, & Spirit Genesis 2:4-7

Our Tragedy Death came into the world because of sin - Genesis 3:17-19, 5:1-5; 1 Cor 15:22 Death was God's punishment for sin - Genesis 3:4; John 8:44 Death is spoken of as a physical or spiritual separation Death is a promise of God - Genesis 2:17, 3:4; Hebrews 9:27 Spiritual death because sin separates man from God (Isa 59:1-2) - Romans 5:12, 6:23; Ephesians 2:1; 1 Timothy 5:6; James 1:15 Physical death because God separated man for the tree of life - Genesis 3:22-23

Our Mortality The Bible teaches that we are mortals Mortal: Liable or subject to death - Romans 6:12, 8:11; 1 Corinthians 15:53-54; 2 Corinthians 4:11 “Mortal” in each reference alludes to the body, the fleshly part of man The Bible teaches that our resurrected bodies will be immortal (1 Cor 15:53-53) - 2 Corinthians 5:1, 4

Our Identity The truth about each of us is very important If I just bear the image of earthly man, I have no real hope or purpose - 1 Corinthians 15:19 If I also bear the image of the heaven Father, I have real hope and purpose - Genesis 1:27

The body is the earthly house of flesh in which we live Our Identity The truth about each of us is that man is a threefold being - 1 Thessalonians 5:23 The Body The Soul The Spirit The body is the earthly house of flesh in which we live The body is the moral part of our makeup - 2 Corinthians 4:16 The soul usually means the person who lives in the body: the "You“ - Revelation 6:9-11 The soul usually refers to the inner person, the seat of the appetites, desires, affections - Matthew 10:28 The spirit is the highest part of man, that assimilates him to God - Genesis 2:7 The spirit is the part of man that is made in the image of God - Hebrews 12:9

Conclusion: The human makeup includes three parts: body, soul, and spirit. Because of this, the death of the body will neither be the death of the soul nor the spirit that are within each of us. The spirit lives on! Beyond Death's Door there is life! Next: Beyond Death's Door: What Happens at Death?
