Our Tragedy Death came into the world because of sin - Genesis 3:17-19, 5:1-5; 1 Cor 15:22 Death was God's punishment for sin - Genesis 3:4; John 8:44 Death is spoken of as a physical or spiritual separation Death is a promise of God - Genesis 2:17, 3:4; Hebrews 9:27 Spiritual death because sin separates man from God (Isa 59:1-2) - Romans 5:12, 6:23; Ephesians 2:1; 1 Timothy 5:6; James 1:15 Physical death because God separated man for the tree of life - Genesis 3:22-23
Our Mortality The Bible teaches that we are mortals Mortal: Liable or subject to death - Romans 6:12, 8:11; 1 Corinthians 15:53-54; 2 Corinthians 4:11 “Mortal” in each reference alludes to the body, the fleshly part of man The Bible teaches that our resurrected bodies will be immortal (1 Cor 15:53-53) - 2 Corinthians 5:1, 4
Our Identity The truth about each of us is very important If I just bear the image of earthly man, I have no real hope or purpose - 1 Corinthians 15:19 If I also bear the image of the heaven Father, I have real hope and purpose - Genesis 1:27
The body is the earthly house of flesh in which we live Our Identity The truth about each of us is that man is a threefold being - 1 Thessalonians 5:23 The Body The Soul The Spirit The body is the earthly house of flesh in which we live The body is the moral part of our makeup - 2 Corinthians 4:16 The soul usually means the person who lives in the body: the "You“ - Revelation 6:9-11 The soul usually refers to the inner person, the seat of the appetites, desires, affections - Matthew 10:28 The spirit is the highest part of man, that assimilates him to God - Genesis 2:7 The spirit is the part of man that is made in the image of God - Hebrews 12:9
Conclusion: The human makeup includes three parts: body, soul, and spirit. Because of this, the death of the body will neither be the death of the soul nor the spirit that are within each of us.
