Potters field air quality Research question : What effect do hoses in an arena have on air quality? Conclusion : In conclusion we found at the the air quality isn’t super high in the arena it was only a bit higher when you brought the horses in. On the graph you can see at the beginning we started with a few horses in the arena and you can see that in the graph there is a break with no horses and you see the graph drop back down and the air quality improved as those horses were not there. Then my group re-enter the arena and the graph went back up. This is result is the dirt getting roughed up form us riding, therefore increasing the particulate matter in the arena. Background info: What is the reason for your interest- We were interested in this area because i like horses and and i wanted to know what the air quality was like in the arena and if the levels would be high enough to interfere with people who are ridings’ health. What does Pm 2.5 mean- Pm 2.5 means Pm 2.5 is air pollution and when it gets to high it is bad for people health What is the size? Compare it to something? The size of these particles are very very tiny like the size of a piece of sand, and are easy to inhale. What are sources of Pm? What are some causes- Some things that make up pm 2.5 is sulfates ,nitrates, organic compounds, carbon, and water things that are bad are fires, exhaust, power plants What is the EPA limit? The EPA limit for 2.5 PM is 12 micrograms per cubic meter and for 24 hours it is 35 micrograms per meter How much time do we spend inside? People spend 93% of their life indoors and then another 7% in cars. We spend about 7% of our life outdoor Improvements: Some improvements we would have made is running the meter longer for example running it for 24 hours. So we would be able to see how the graph changed more over time with each lesson and thing that would affect the meter. Another improvement we would make is to put the meter in a different area of the arena. I would have done this to see if I got different information, or if putting the meter in a different place in the arena would affect the PM levels. We had the meter up high in the arena and if we had put it lower we would have gotten different results, such as maybe more particles in the air would get picked up by the air quality meter. Hypothesis - We predicted that the air quality in the arena would be worse when there are more horse in it, and that the air quality would get worse with more than one horse in that that would depend on what things are going on in the arena, or how compact the space is. Result - Average -.031 Maximum -.036 Minimum - .027 Date - 03/09/2019 Start - 14:54 End- 15:44 Methods - We used the air quality meter and set it up on march 9 th, 2019 and we started the meter around 3 o’clock and we ran it for 2 hours during this time we had horse coming in and out of the arena, and there was never just one horse in, we had at least two horses. We also did this during the winters so the arena was complete closed of from outside and the barn where the horses are. During this time we did groundwork (walking, trot, canter) and some jumping. We didn't water the dirt or any thing either, meaning that there was a more likely chance of getting higher air quality readings than if it were to be watered down.
