Curriculum Night September 5, 2019 Grade Four Curriculum

Curriculum Changes Curriculum: The Ministry of Education has embarked upon a revision of the curriculum and the pedagogy associated with its implementation. It is best described as student-driven inquiry; which, includes more project-based learning, problem-based learning, and design-based learning. There is a five step process to such inquiry: engage stage, explore stage, explain stage, extend stage, and evaluation stage.

Religion Explore the Archdiocesan Theme: “I Can Do All Things Through Christ!” Develop an understanding of the life of Jesus and His message of love using the parables Explain the significance of the colours of the liturgical year Relate the Ten Commandments and Beatitudes to one’s own personal life Explore the Catholic faith tradition as expressed by First Nations community

Science Students will investigate three areas of Science: Life Science (Biomes), Physical Science (Energy), and Earth Science (Relationship between the Earth, Moon, and Sun)

Language Arts The Language Arts Program will include the following areas: 1) Spelling – examine, organize, and categorize words 2) Reading - reading strategies 3) Novel Studies - Ms. Sheppard 4) Oral/Written - writing process/speaking skills 5) Grammar - parts of speech 6) Handwriting – “Canadian Handwriting” Book D

Math Math is supported using the program and text, “Focus” Math focuses on the following: Patterns Number Theory (Representing Numbers) Data Relationships (Pictographs, Bar graphs, Diagrams) Geometry Fractions and Decimals Measurement (Time, Dates, Area) 7) Computation (Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying, Dividing)

Physical Education Students will participate in team sports – soccer, volleyball, European Handball, basketball and football Students will participate in low organizational games including dodgeball, tag games, capture the flag etc… Sportsmanship, physical fitness, and skill development will be assessed

French and Music French will be taught by Mrs. Sills French lessons are 40 minutes, two times a week Music will be taught by Mrs. Draayers Music lessons are 40 minutes, two times a week

Mrs. Adams / Mrs. Piper - Thursday Spelling and Grammar – common English sounds and spellings, and spelling rules (Mrs. Piper) Social Studies lessons are based on the text, “Our Beginnings”, focussing on Aboriginal cultures and explorers of Canada (Mrs. Adams) Art (Mrs. Adams)

Social Studies Mrs. Adams will teach this strand of the curriculum

Classroom Procedures and Discipline Persistent problems involving inappropriate behaviour and/or incomplete homework, parents will be notified by phone and/or written communication Periodic check of homework chart is encouraged Students will be encouraged to behave responsibly, be accountable for their actions, and accept consequences Students not completing seat/class work during the day will finish the work at home Assignments not meeting the criteria and/or expectations, will be redone

Foundations Skills Assessment BC Ministry of Education Three areas of testing: numeracy, writing and reading Test administered in February Students will receive a weekly sample question. Parents are encouraged to assist their child Sample questions are available on the internet
