STAND UP STAND UP FOR JESUS (GHS 233)
STAND UP, STAND UP FOR JESUS [GHS 233] 1. Stand up, stand up for Jesus! Ye soldiers of the cross; Lift high His royal banner, It must not suffer loss: From vict’ry unto vict’ry, His army shall He lead, Till every foe is vanquished, And Christ is Lord indeed.
STAND UP, STAND UP FOR JESUS [GHS 233] 2. Stand up, stand up for Jesus! The trumpet call obey; Forth to the mighty conflict, In this His glorious day; Ye that are men now serve Him Against unnumbered foes; Let courage rise with danger, And strength to strength oppose.
STAND UP, STAND UP FOR JESUS [GHS 233] 3. Stand up, stand up for Jesus! Stand in His strength alone, The arm of flesh will fail you, Ye dare not trust your own; Put on the gospel armour, And watching unto prayer, Where duty calls, or danger, Be never wanting there.
STAND UP, STAND UP FOR JESUS [GHS 233] 4. Stand up, stand up for Jesus! The strife will not be long; This day the noise of battle, The next the victor’s song; To him that overcometh, A crown of life shall be; He with the King of glory Shall reign eternally. END OF HYMN

RECAP OF OUR LAST STUDY “Call and Commitment to Perfection”: God’s grace has called us from sin to present us in holiness before God. It is our duty to renounce the old life and yield our lives to God so He can perfect His work in us. Christian perfection means to be without fault, to be free from sin and inward corruption. It is to be perfect in love, to be mature. God demands holiness from us because He is holy. We are made perfect through the ministry of the Word: teaching and warning us in wisdom until God’s glory is perfected in us.
TODAY’S STUDY: LESSON 762: WARNING AGAINST FALSE TEACHING AND WORSHIP MEMORY VERSE: …… “In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words.” (Colossians 2:3,4). TEXT: Colossians 2:1-22
INTRODUCTION Apostle Paul warned Colossian believers against false teaching and worship so they would not be deceived by erroneous teachers who exalted ceremonial laws and traditions of men above the doctrines of Christ. When we have spiritual understanding of Christ’s divinity and doctrines, we will not embrace falsehood. Like the Apostle, Christian ministers should feed the flock of Christ with the unchanging truth of the scriptures to shield them from straying into falsehood. QUESTION 1: Why do Christian leaders need to repeatedly emphasise the truth of Scripture to their flock? – Acts 20:30; Isaiah 9:16
REVELATION OF CHRIST’S DIVINITY AND BELIEVERS’ EXPECTED RESPONSE The Apostle condemned false teachings and asserted Christ’s deity. “For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.” In Christ we have everything we need for salvation and righteous living. Receiving Jesus as Lord and Personal Saviour is the beginning of our life with Christ but one must continue to follow Him to be rooted, built up and strengthened in faith. “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him”. QUESTION 2: How can believers have and enjoy the wisdom of God which Christ embodies? – Colossians 2:6; 1:10
WARNING AGAINST TEACHINGS THAT UNDERMINE CHRIST’S PRE-EMINENCE The Apostle warned the Colossians and all believers against deception, tradition, human philosophy and convention. Christian leaders must be abreast of prevailing false teachings and religions around them that contradict the word of God and proactively warn their members of the danger of embracing them. Today, believers and leaders must expose false teachings and teachers and maintain their commitment to teaching the wholesome truth of Scripture. QUESTION 3: What should be our attitude to false doctrines and preachers? – Romans 16:17; 2 Thessalonians 3:6; 2 John 10
EXHORTATION AGAINST FALSE WORSHIP Colossians 2:16-23; 1 Timothy 4:1; Titus 1:14; Isaiah 29:13,14 “Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon…” (Colossians 2:16-18). Having exposed the errors and falsehood of the false teachers, the Apostle proceeded to exhort the Colossian Christians not to let others condemn their diet or take them back to religious rituals, worshiping of angels, ceremonies, etc. These are voluntary humility or for self gratification. Rather, we should focus on faith in Christ alone. However, Christ established water baptism and the Holy Communion; we must uphold these ordinances.
EXHORTATION AGAINST FALSE WORSHIP Colossians 2:16-23; 1 Timothy 4:1; Titus 1:14; Isaiah 29:13,14 QUESTION 4: How did Paul the apostle describe Colossian Christians’ submission to false teaching? – Colossians 2:16-17; Romans 14:3-5,17; Galatians 4:10
CONCLUSION Believers in Christ should beware of false teachers and their errors; we should not embrace ordinances that have been abolished. We are cautioned never to accept any form of worship that is perverse and idolatrous, denies the Sonship of Christ or elevates an object or any personality above Him. Ministers should be relentless in their effort to feed the flock of God to enable them resist present-day falsehood and continue abiding in the faith.
