Coaching that Empowers the Human Spirit A GUIDE FOR TRAINERS WHO TRAIN SOCIAL SERVICE PROFESSIONALS

ABOUT Barry E. Knight…

A FEW REASONS WHY PEOPLE HIRE ME: “We need a facilitator to help us develop our vision/strategic plan and help us see opportunities and possibilities we might be missing, and then stick with it as we execute it.”   “Despite our best efforts, we are still not seeing the goals or outcomes we desire. Can you help us figure out what's wrong and how to move forward?” “I need to learn how to better lead, engage, and coach my team to greater performance levels.” “Our teams are not working well together and it’s hindering our culture and performance. We need to become a more cohesive team.” “I want our staff to more effectively engage and build trust with those we are called to serve and remove inequity from our practices.”

Learning Objectives:   Know and model ‘7 core principles of coaching’ that will help your learners more effectively engage and impact their staff and families. Ensure learners understand the power of "Presencing" and engaging the human spirit in their work. Transform your trainings into mini coaching sessions to further model the impact of the content Prepare learners to incorporate the 7 principles in real-life scenarios.

In groups, talk about the current/new initiatives/trainings that are being offered/mandated for social service professionals (SSP’s). What is the purpose/outcomes of these initiatives/trainings? In short, how do the SSP’s feel about having to go through these trainings/learning new initiatives? As it relates to training these new initiatives/trainings, what do you feel would make your training more impactful/engaging?

HUMAN SERVICE AGENCY

HUMAN SERVICE AGENCY

MAKE EVERY TRAINING ABOUT SELF CARE! Training and coaching must inspire hope, action, and change for the PERSON (who) as well as their PERFORMANCE (what). MAKE EVERY TRAINING ABOUT SELF CARE!

7 CORE PRINCIPLES OF COACHING AND ENGAGEMENT Be Emotionally Healthy and Fully Present Honor Them as a Whole Being and the Expert on Themselves Earn Their, Trust, Respect, and Confidence Practice Active Listening Ask Powerful Questions Give Direct, Empowering Communication and Feedback Co-Create an Action and Accountability Plan

PRESENCING ACTIVITY “PICK UP THE PIECES”

THE BIGGEST SHIFT THAT NEEDS TO TAKE PLACE IN CHILD WELFARE IS… ALIGNMENT (Training that optimizes the relation of the PERSON and the PERFORMANCE) One of the biggest innovations in coaching and training is aligning ALL training and coaching with an element of empowering and elevating the SSP’s mindset, beliefs, and behaviors to the level of the expected performance. One way to elevate and empower the learner’s experience is to ask powerful questions that ‘Transfer the Ownership’ of learning.

COACHING QUESTIONS THAT ‘TRANSFER OWNERSHIP’ OF LEARNING: “I know this seems like a lot, but if we looked through rose-colored glasses, where might we see the best results from this?” “How would you make this more effective? Do you believe that would work for you? How about your peers, is there anything you’d add to make it more effective for them?” “Now that you know this, what might you be able to do more of?” “Tell me 2-3 great things about you that would make you successful in this?”

COACHING QUESTIONS THAT ‘TRANSFER OWNERSHIP’ OF LEARNING: “Let’s assume there’s no way around this and we have to get it done. Where might we start that would give us the greatest momentum? Be creative.” “If you were leading this, how would you inspire others to get involved?” “Where do you see you would need the most support in accomplishing this?” “What does a WIN look like for you and your team?”

COACHING AND TRAINING THAT ALIGNS AND EMPOWERS Train the Material, and during the training… Ask powerful questions that ‘Transfer the Ownership’ Align with strengths and empower those strengths during the training Show the Win-Win Model the Practice during the training (when possible) Follow up, get feedback, and make changes (when possible) Design Actions (using Transfer of Ownership Questions) Co-Create an Action and Accountability plan
