Assessment @ Brooklyn College Fall 2019 OFFICE OF Institutional effectiveness August 29th 2019

MSCHE Standard V. Assessment of student learning and achievement demonstrates that the institution’s students have accomplished educational goals consistent with their program of study, degree level, the institution’s mission, and appropriate expectations for institutions of higher education. Office of Institutional Effectiveness

The Msche charge The Middle States Commission on Higher Education requires all accredited institutions to have… … clearly stated student learning outcomes, at the institution and degree/program levels, which are interrelated with one another, with relevant educational experiences, and with the institution’s mission Office of Institutional Effectiveness

They are usually measured by a test or other form of assessment college’s definition Student Learning Outcomes are “the specific skills, attitudes, and abilities that a student should have obtained upon completion of a particular course or program.” – Brooklyn College Assessment Handbook They are usually measured by a test or other form of assessment Office of Institutional Effectiveness

MSCHE Recommendations – OUTCOME OF THE ACCREDITATION ACTION in Spring 2019 A recommendation is a directive by MSCHE to improve/change a process in order to fully meet the standard Brooklyn College must: “Enhance the assessment and monitoring of the SLOs to ensure timely, sustainable and consistent implementation.”

Student learning outcomes are… Written by faculty Statements about what students will be able to do as a result of curriculum Defined by their usefulness – is this a good tool for practical assessment practices? Not a comprehensive definition of everything a program does The basis of assessment – defining what we value and want students to achieve

Brooklyn College’s Response Faculty Review and Evaluate the SLOs for each Degree Program Evaluation/Workshop Session as scheduled by the School Dean Support from the Office of Assessment

Timeline for SLO evaluation Faculty are identified by Chairs/Program Directors/Major Coordinators to participate in the evaluation session of the departments’ degree program level SLOs Workshop/Evaluation Sessions scheduled by School Revise SLOs as needed and submit to School Dean
