FUTURE URBAN TRANSPORT : BICYCLE VIADUCTS Southern African Transport Conference FUTURE URBAN TRANSPORT : BICYCLE VIADUCTS Ladies and gentlemen, good morning, I am Chenyu Zhang from Chang’an Univeristy, China. Today I’d like to give you a presentation for the future urban transport: bicycle viaducts. Chenyu Zhang School of highway, Chang’an University, Xi’an, China SATC, Pretoria, 12/07/2018

1. Necessity of developing bicycle traffic 2. Feasibility of building bicycle viaducts 3. Yunding Road bicycle viaducts My presentation is divided into four parts. Just to give you a brief overview. 4. Summary

1. Necessity of developing bicycle traffic 2. Feasibility of building bicycle viaducts 3. Yunding Road bicycle viaducts Let’s start with the necessity of developing bicycle traffic. 4. Summary

As economy of China develops rapidly and people’s living standards become higher, the pace of life is accelerating and the vehicle retention is increasing. Traffic congestion in urban areas is more and more serious. Meanwhile, the slow-traffic lane is gradually occupied by the motor vehicles. However, it is unrealistic to regain the right of bicycle lanes in a short time With the booming development of bike-sharing in 2017, bicycle is gradually gaining its popularity in China. However, the disordered parking of bike-sharing seriously affects the appearance and order of cities and brings a heavy burden on the management. Therefore, it is inevitable to develop the bicycle traffic.

1. Necessity of developing bicycle traffic 2. Feasibility of building bicycle viaducts 3. Yunding Road bicycle viaducts Then, I ‘ll talk about the feasibility of building bicycle viaducts. 4. Summary

In recent years, the haze has seriously affected people’s normal life and health in China. The pollution caused by vehicle emissions has played a great part in the source of urban air pollution. Therefore, it is one of the inevitable choices for the development of urban transport in China to build a low-carbon transportation system.

23 million 400 million 17 billion 70 million Ministry of Transport of the People's Republic of China demonstrates that there are already 77 bike-sharing enterprises in China. At present, 23 million sharing-bicycles have been launched, with 400 million registered users, and the cumulative number of services has exceeded 17 billion. At the peak, 70 million people are using shared bicycles in a day. Besides, Chinese government enacted policies to advocate green travel and bicycle commuting. Considering above reasons, it is feasible and effective to build bicycle viaducts in large and medium-sized cities in China. 23 million 400 million 17 billion 70 million

1. Necessity of developing bicycle traffic 2. Feasibility of building bicycle viaducts 3. Yunding Road bicycle viaducts Xiamen built the Yunding Road bike fast viaducts, it is the first bicycle viaducts in China and the world’s longest bicycle expressway. 4. Summary

Xiamen built the Yunding Road bike fast viaducts, it is the first bicycle viaducts in China and the world’s longest bicycle expressway. 7.6 kilometers in length, we can see that it is attached to the BRT viaducts, it can shelter the wind and rain, no traffic lights, no car interference, all the way unimpeded, safe and comfortable. 11 entrances and exits are set up on the whole line. The lines connect technical parks, residential areas, commercial centers and important public buildings, and are connected with BRT stations, subway stations and bus stations along the line.

1. Necessity of developing bicycle traffic 2. Feasibility of building bicycle viaducts 3. Yunding Road bicycle viaducts Lastly, summary. 4. Summary

Summary · Cooperation in “PPP mode” between government and enterprises This paper mainly discusses the bike viaducts in large and medium-sized cities of China. In addition, under the current dilemma caused by bike-sharing to urban managers and bicycle enterprises, enterprises can cooperate with government to construct and manage the bicycle viaducts with "PPP mode"(Public—Private—Partnership). The Chinese government and enterprises share their responsibilities reasonably and effectively for mutual benefits. With the constant construction and improvement of bicycle lanes, it will also be possible to build inter-city or even inter-provincial bicycle viaducts. · Inter-city or even inter-provincial bicycle viaducts

Thanks Thank you for attention.
