About ArabWIC 6th Annual International Women in Computing The goal of the 2019 ArabWIC 6th Annual International conference on Arab Women in Computing is to inspire, support and celebrate women in computing in the Arab world and create links with the global tech ecosystem. More than five hundred international and regional women and men from all technology sectors (academics, students (all levels), industry professionals (all levels), and entrepreneurs) are expected to participate making this the largest conference on women in tech in the Arab World. This conference will explore the state of the art of computing/technology, the latest innovations and trends, entrepreneurship and the role of women in tech start-ups and of women VC’s. Women’s enrollment in computer science courses, their involvement in industry and academia, gender gaps, positive trends as well as barriers in the field will all be examined. The conference will feature renowned technical researchers, keynote talks, interactive technical workshops, hackathons, mentoring sessions, networking, career coaching for all levels, a career fair featuring top tech companies, and a gala to celebrate women in technology.

Who will participate at the ArabWIC CONFERENCE 2019 More than five hundred international, regional and local women and men from all technology sectors are expected to participate making this the largest conference on women in tech in the MENA: Academics (Researchers and Faculty all levels and from all fields of Computing (30%) Students (all levels) (30%) Industry professionals (all levels) (35%) Entrepreneurs (5%) Venture Capitalists (VC’s)

Why it’s important to support MENA Women in Tech Majority of computer scientists in most countries in MENA region are female vs. 20% in the US 4,500 female students are studying computing at one university in Saudi Arabia – and yet the US has only 10,000 female graduates each year in computing Many talented female graduates seek scholarships but in most countries these opportunities are rare and often given to men The MENA region has many high skilled female computer technology graduates and postgraduates – but many are unemployed Women in Tech in MENA win more than 40% of prestigious Tech competitions including entrepreneurship competition The opportunity to hire skilled employees is great The opportunity to promote and sell technology in parts of the region is high Tech companies are active– hiring, gaining mindshare, and selling high-tech is emerging

The Arab Women in Computing (ArabWIC) Past Conferences There has been 5 successful ArabWIC conferences held since ArabWIC inception in 2012: Been held at  American University of Beirut AUB, Lebanon in 2017 Been held in Abu Dhabi at New York University of Abu Dhabi 3 times (2012, 2013, and 2015) and in 2016 was held in Algeria 100s of attendees from across the globe – including leaders in industry, academia, entrepreneurs, VCs, and international women in Tech organizations such as ACM-W, and Anita Borg. Created a strong network of connected professional women across government, entrepreneurs, industry and academia (Students and Faculty). Fostered more than 17 active chapters across the MENA region with local events focusing on mentoring, networking, research, teaching girls coding, Hackathons, and technical webinars and training, and providing scholarships to conferences. Provided around 30 scholarships to CS conferences in the US during the past 5 years. ArabWIC Summary About Arab Women in Computing (ArabWIC) The goal of ArabWIC is to support, inspire, retain, encourage collaboration, increase visibility and status of Arab women in computing, enabling them to achieve their career aspirations. ArabWIC aims to create links with international women in computing organizations and is proud to be officially affiliated with the Anita Borg Institute (ABI), the Systers communities, and the Academic Computing Machinery Women in Computing (ACM-W). ArabWIC has forged important collaboration and partnerships with leading organizations in the Middle East such as ArabNet, Wamda, AUB CS department (American University in Beirut Department of Computer Science), Zoomaal, LLWB (Lebanese League for Women in Business), and Stanford’s Wids and the Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI). ArabWIC has built a community of more than 2500 Arab Women in Tech (academics, students, entrepreneurs, VC’s, and industry professionals) from all over the world and has successfully created chapters in 17 countries. ArabWIC has offered scholarships to attend the GHC (Grace Hopper Annual Celebration) for 30 women (Thanks to QCRI for the generous funding) since 2014. ArabWIC members have organized several hackathons in many cities such as Beirut, Amman, Ramallah, Gaza, Dubai, Riyadh, and Tunis along with major organizations such as AngelHack, LLWB, Wamda, ArabNet and Zoomaal.
