Presentation transcript:

Tips & Tricks for good presentations The purpose of a presentation is to communicate: keep it simple, both text and images. Start with a clean presentation START FRESH: Rather than editing an old presentation, you should always start with the latest powerpoint template available in the Identity Guidelines and add content from here. This will help everyone to present consistently, which only improves our professional image. COPY&PASTE RISKS: If you want to copy and paste from a previous presentation, make sure that you use the menu option Edit >Paste Special and choose "Unformatted Text." This will prevent styling conflicts and simplify your editing process. Prepare Write a script that follows good storytelling: give it a beginning, middle, and end. Prepare handouts and distribute them at the appropriate time. Tell the audience ahead of time that you will be giving out an outline of your presentation so that they will not waste time taking unnecessary notes during your presentation. Stick to the point As soon as a slide appears, the audience will start reading it. If you have the next four points you plan to make displayed, your audience will be ahead of you waiting for you to catch up and not pay attention to the point you are making. If possible, make your point with graphics instead of text. Any illustration or image displayed should be there to make your point stronger,-if it doesn't support your point, remove it. Use clear and simple visuals so as not to confuse the audience. While presenting you can temporarily hide the presentation from your audience by pressing "w" (this will make the screen go white) or "b" (this will make the screen go black). Return to the presentation by pressing any key. Keep your script to yourself #1 KEY POINT: Do not overload your slides with too much text or data (for example this slide has way too much text…). Your slides should be there to underline and reinforce what you are saying as you give the presentation. Note that PowerPoint has functions to display notes onto the presenter’s screen that do not get sent to the projector, or you can use notecards. Keep it simple Place your graphics in a similar location within each slide. Use the slide designs within the downloaded template and stick with the fixed size for images and text. Use the colors within the preset color theme. You can also find the color specifications in the colour section of the identity guidelines. Be careful with the use of visual "flash" to your slides, avoid the temptation of using to much fades, swipes and flashing text.
