Building Health Partnerships: self-care Partnership session 1: 19th October 2017 @IVAR_UK @SocialEnt_UK #BHPselfcare

Local perspectives On the local system… On Self-care… “the aspiration is for better more meaningful relationships locally – and think about what this really means… as well as meaningful relationships with local people.” “the system works in a fragmented way because it’s commissioned in a fragmented way.” “Everyday an older person spends in hospital they loose 5% of muscle!” “You can’t bottle and measure these impacts!” On Self-care… @SocialEnt_UK @IVAR_UK #BHPselfcare

What do partnerships look like at their best? Respectful, mutual benefit Passionate Work on the ground Clear outcomes and joint monitoring Needs-led not system-led Clear expectations All partners know their and others’ value Trusting, open, honest, collaborative Learning together Strong communication Flexible Sharing knowledge/resources/skills/networks Celebrate success Shared goals and vision Equality Respect and understanding of community Involving residents, co-design Enrich/complement each other/add value Enjoyable relationship Supportive @SocialEnt_UK @IVAR_UK #BHPselfcare

Local context Where are we heading? Where are we now? Dependency culture, lack of commitment/ambition Lack of funding, austerity Willingness, good ideas and attitude but not able to progress Better involvement of voluntary services Where are we heading? Developing neighbourhood/place approaches Engaged communities Do prevention as well as cure Grant eligibility rules to prevent larger organisation getting all the money Fully integrated services Investment in VCSE sector e.g. training and empowerment What’s working? Good leaders, engaging events Good population plan, a focus on individuals Both informal and formal partnerships e.g. ‘Stronger Together’ work Integrated neighbourhood teams Social Investment Fund What’s not working? Services competing for targets does not encourage collaboration Perception of self-care = ‘get on with it’ National legislation needs to support development/local issues Funding not available to support ideas Lack of funding, austerity, no feedback on unsuccessful applications from CCGs Master-servant commissioning structure Star procurement is a condescending approach to co-creation @SocialEnt_UK @IVAR_UK #BHPselfcare

Idea under development Services shadow services, buddying to understand and experience what organisations do - seeing/demonstrating the value What do we need to make it happen? Build it into inductions, appraisals as development goals Make them valuable experiences Don’t make confidentiality a barrier, all trained have processes Copy CCG/Council /NHS idea of ‘RCT’ – Randomised Coffee Trials (everybody interested put forward their name and was paired up) Do annually? Skills and capacity Everybody interested puts forwarded their name and us paired up – do this annually Invest time all round Very next steps Everyone in the room to commit to speaking to two other people outside of the meeting Speak to managers, feed the idea back to our organisations @SocialEnt_UK @IVAR_UK #BHPselfcare

Idea under development Borough-wide coordination of volunteers and opportunities website: ‘Our people’ website What do we need to make it happen? Shared directory i.e. website, hub, one point of contact/access i.e. CVS Joint volunteer recruitment/single pint of access Shared expenditure pot/funds Skills and capacity Multiple agencies have existing resource Existing volunteer training Very next steps Shared agreement CVS to consult organisations and carry out research around expectations and need Signpost volunteers to other organisations @SocialEnt_UK @IVAR_UK #BHPselfcare

Idea under development Time banking and reward scheme with a stamp or credit for each hour spent volunteering or a qualification. ‘It allows Betty’s tea room to contribute to social initiatives without having to give time’. What do we need to make it happen? Volunteers/people CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) store Give support to strengthen CVS Rochdale To shout about it Skills and capacity All of the skills are there, just need to bring together Very next steps It’s happening – need to scale Test and learn – roll out Expand and refine Link to Work & Pensions (and restrictions) @SocialEnt_UK @IVAR_UK #BHPselfcare

Invite commissioners to our space and learn from commissioners Idea under development Invite commissioners to our space and learn from commissioners What do we need to make it happen? Choose a venue and people to invite, examples below: Petrus ‘Hub’ (e.g. Andy Burnham visited) Hamer Boxing Club (e.g. invite a professional boxer and Clinical Commissioning Group commissioners) Barnardo’s (e.g. and Children's Services, local authority /CCG) Groundwork (e.g. nature sites centre invite GPs and practice managers) Social Prescribing pilot Skills and capacity CVS The community through word of mouth Councillors Volunteers from community to deliver sessions Susan Crutchley – prevention aspects Film making Very next steps Dialogue with commissioners (directly or via CVS) Dates in diaries Hold Health & Well Being Board meeting at a venue like Hamer Boxing Club @SocialEnt_UK @IVAR_UK #BHPselfcare
