Key Stage 1 Reading &

As adults we are the models of good speaking and listening. Learning to read and a love of reading is directly linked to children's success at school and beyond. As adults we are the models of good speaking and listening.

Book bags Each child is given a reading record at the start of the year. Books will be changed weekly by their class teachers. Teachers will write a N.S focus for the children to practice when reading at home. These will differ depending on book levels.

N.S feedback examples Phase 2 - 6 books (red – orange): Children will get N.S focused on them practising a sound from the book. N.S Practice ‘or’ sound: hall, all, wall N.S Look for alternate ‘oa’ sounds: rowing, boats, both, those

N.S feedback examples Orange – Lime+ Children will get N.S focused on a wider variety of things linked to reading and comprehension. N.S Remember to chop up longer words read/ing chopp/ing N.S Practice reading past tense words: looked – hunted - slept N.S Pg 6 – which word tells us how William felt on the ride?

Reading at home Things to do at home: Check book bags for current reading books and try to practice the N.S given by the teacher. Read to and with your child. This models good reading skills and promotes reading enjoyment. Regularly introduce new words (vocabulary) e.g. for the word big you could also introduce large, huge, enormous. This is not about reading the words but about your child hearing and saying them.

Reading at home Although we look at non fiction text types during whole class and group reading in our lessons, we know that children with wider background knowledge are more successful at reading later on.  Readworks.org is free website that you can sign up for with articles short enough to read quickly. The children can pursue their own interests.

What is Bugclub? Bugclub is a reading programme that can be used in school and at home. It helps to develop your child's reading and comprehension skills. Bugclub has a wide range of books at different graded levels. Children will be allocated books that match their current reading level.

Reading Bugclub books at home Inside the front cover are things you can do to support your child when reading. You can: Practice high frequency words Practice the sounds they are going to encounter.

Reading Bugclub books at home You can also use the games and questions for discussions when you read at home with your child.

Phonics books Phonics Bugclub books contain a guide to help your child read the sounds found in the book. When reading online there will be a quiz question that focuses on word skills.

Using Bugclub online If you have access to the internet at home children can log onto Bugclub and enjoy reading books and completing different questions found in the eBooks. The quiz questions help them practice their reading skills. The questions all match to the reading level of the books. The books are also audio books, so children can enjoy hearing an expressive reading of the story. All teachers will try to allocate time for children to use Bugclub when possible.

Let’s have a look at a book online. Using Bugclub Let’s have a look at a book online.
