Jessica Franko Google Summit July 15-16th, 2014 Ms. Franko’s Channel In the Classroom Jessica Franko Google Summit July 15-16th, 2014 Ms. Franko’s Channel Intro Videos

In the Classroom Please complete the survey http://goo.gl/fHPg8b Google Summit July 15-16th, 2014 3-5 min Participants complete brief intro survey on YouTube familiarity and usage.

Today We Will... Increase familiarity with YouTube logistics. Explore ways to use YouTube for instructional content, process, and product. Objectives. 1 min

Agenda: Assess current YouTube usage & familiarity. Ideas for using video content in the classroom. YouTube challenge #1: Create a playlist. YouTube challenge #2: Make & upload a video. Reflection & Wrap Up. Agenda. 1 min

Current Usage/Familiarity: Let’s look at our survey. What other thoughts & concerns do you have about using video content in the classroom? 3-5min -Review quantitative feedback: survey responses to get an overall picture of the participants current usage & familiarity. -Review qualitative feedback: share/discuss current usage, note any commonality.

Content, Process, Product: Ideas & Examples We can tailor our classroom YouTube use to help teach different instructional content in a variety of ways. We can also have students learn through YouTube as a medium. Slides 6-10 should take 15-20 mins.

Content: Ideas & Examples Illustrate a specific point or give an example. See something you couldn’t otherwise. Have a guest speaker.

Process: Ideas & Examples Differentiate learning by tailoring to individual interests: students search for videos within a topic of interest. Differentiate by allowing students to pause, replay, or skip ahead. Flip your classroom. ‘skip ahead’: click link>>playlists>>pick one to illustrate how an advanced student can move forward at own pace.

Product: Ideas & Examples YouTube is now a medium for expressing and sharing ideas. Students can learn functionally by creating content. Good YouTube skills can be lucrative! ** Alex Day Story: http://goo.gl/kdCd8e

Other Ideas & Examples: Brain Breaks & Classroom Management Collaboration & Coaching Use YouTube clips as brain breaks and rewards. Learn what other teachers are doing and share your stuff too!

Other Ideas & Examples: Can you see using any of these for instruction? How else might you use YouTube for teaching? 5mins Disussion.

YouTube Challenge #1: Create a Playlist: A playlist helps organize a set of videos you want want viewers to enjoy in a single session or a particular order. Create a playlist within your YouTube channel that you could use in the classroom. Slides 12-14 25 mins. Explain the task and direct participants to the navigation within their YouTube channel. Let them figure things out on their own for about half the time, pause to ask questions/whole group discussion, then with the remaining time circulate to provide help, and allow them to help each other. Ask volunteers to share playlists. A playlist is like a folder for organizing video content you’d like to save. There are multiple ways to create one. https://www.youtube.com/yt/playbook/playlists.html When should I make a playlist? To group a set of videos that you want viewers to enjoy in a single session or in a particular order To group videos around a theme or a tent-pole event. To separate multiple shows into playlists and feature on your channel. To combine your most-viewed videos with new uploads. To create “Best of” playlists to lure (and entertain!) potential subscribers. (Hint: Think Content, Process, Product)

Multiple ways to create a Playlist: To start from “My Channel”: Slides 12-14 25 mins. Explain the task and direct participants to the navigation within their YouTube channel. Let them figure things out on their own for about half the time, pause to ask questions/whole group discussion, then with the remaining time circulate to provide help, and allow them to help each other. Then, pause to ask questions/whole group discussion, then with the remaining time circulate to provide help, and allow them to help each other. Then ask volunteers to share videos.
