BELLWORK Have you related to Holden yet? How have you related to him?
PLANNER: HOMEWORK Tonight, I would like you to type up your symbol story in the MLA format we are going to learn. It needs to be printed and ready to go for class on Thursday!
CLASS IN TWO PARTS PART ONE: Character Analysis and Traits: Catcher PART TWO: MLA and How to Format
Character Analysis and Traits: Catcher 08-13-19
Holden as a Character As a character, Holden has a few things he does that are characteristically “him” He tends to use a lot of emotional mechanisms that make him the victim of other people, which places the blame on others for his behavior He tends to not have much emotional reaction in his voice, but we can tell, as readers, that there is a lot that Holden really does care about
Holden as a Character Holden also tends to seem to be a passive character This means that he lets things happen to him, rather than doing things to effect an outcome in the story He also describes things as happening to him versus him enacting these things to happen For example, it is the lousiness of people that causes Holden to be an outsider, not the fact that he pushes people away
Other Characters Salinger also uses the grotesque to describe many of the characters in the novel The grotesque is the exaggeration of action to the extreme to make it gross or unreal and uncomfortable for its reader These gross moments in Catcher are so distorted that it almost makes the moment comedic For example: Mr. Spencer and Ackley do gross things to the point that they become almost funny
Conversation What else do you notice about Holden or the other characters that we’ve met? Why do you think Salinger writes them in this way?
