Sound Imagine you’re in a busy New York street… What can you hear?

Sound What role does sound play in film? Though we might think of film as an essentially visual experience, we really cannot afford to underestimate the importance of film sound. Sound guides our emotional response to a scene and can drastically alter how we respond to characters and scenarios.

Diegetic If the character can hear it, then it’s DIEGETIC Sounds that are coming from within the film world! Dialogue Sound Effects Music played by characters/radio If the character can hear it, then it’s DIEGETIC

Non-Diegetic If the character can’t hear it, then it’s NON-DIEGETIC Sound whose source is neither visible on screen nor has been implied to be present in the action. Narration Soundtrack Incidental Sounds If the character can’t hear it, then it’s NON-DIEGETIC

Parallel vs Contrapuntal

Motifs A sound effect or combination of sound effects that are associated with a particular character, setting, situation or idea through the film.  The sound motifs condition the audience emotionally for the intervention, arrival, or actions of a particular character. Can you think of any characters that have recognisable motifs? How are these used to create meaning? The use of sound motifs can help shape a story that requires many characters and many locations and help unify the film and sustain its narrative and thematic development.

Silence How do these 3 clips use silence differently?
