How we learn at Woodgrange Learning and growing together

We can do it! What happens when you fail your driving test? What happens when you fail a maths exam? Are our responses the same?

Fixed mindset Children who believe they are clever often look to prove this to themselves and others. They: Look for quick wins and seek out adult approval or rewards Avoid challenges or tasks that require lots of effort Like certificates and stickers

Open mindset… Children with a growth mindset are: Willing to try new things and take risks Keep on trying, even when its hard! Are not afraid to make mistakes Try to do better than they did before rather than compete against others

At Woodgrange… We believe there is no such thing as a clever child! Children learn at different rates but all children learn. Some children need extra time, extra support extra practice …but all children will learn as long as they believe they can!

What do we do at Woodgrange to develop an growth mindset? We do not Talk about learning not work Tell children where they have improved Encourage and praise children’s efforts Talk to children about how they can improve further Organise ALL learning in mixed ability partners or groups Tell children they are clever Give marks out of 10 Give certificates or stickers Praise outcomes Compare children Group by ability Use rubbers to hide mistakes Put hands up to answer questions

Learning behaviour We encourage and support children to develop the following learning attributes: Curiosity- Curious Cat Resilience- Go for it Gorilla and Tough Tortoise Sharing and cooperating- Helpful Hippo

Learning partners (LP) Children work with a partner for much of their time in class. We do this because it supports: Talk and the development of ideas Listening and explaining Less confident children to speak up Children to get to know ALL their class mates An open mindset- avoids the same children answering questions and others sitting back

What does this look like in lessons? Children sit with their LP on carpet and are given “talk tasks” Children sit with their LP at tables and work at their own challenge level in maths or do their own writing, but are encouraged to talk to each other and help if needed. Partners are randomly selected and changed weekly or fortnightly Partners are always mixed ability
