Historically Underrepresented Improve and Know Evolving Terminology Key concepts and terms Historically Underrepresented Implicit Bias Explicit Bias Micro-aggressions Privileged Also known as unconscious or hidden bias, implicit biases are negative associations that people unknowingly hold. They are expressed automatically, without conscious awareness. Involves consciously held, self-reported attitudes that shape how people evaluate or behave towards members of a particular group. Brief and commonplace daily verbal, behavioral, or environmental indignities, whether inention or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative prejudicial slights. An underrepresented group describes a subset of a population that holds a smaller percentage within a significant subgroup. Belonging to a group that enjoys special privileges. Under diversity, we mean a racial group.

Evolving Terminology Improve and Know Key concepts and terms Culture Ethnicity Race Prejudice Discrimination A social system of meaning and custom that is developed by a group of people to assure its adaptation and survival. Distinguished by a set of unspoken rules. Smaller social groups based on characteristics such as shared sense of group membership, values, behavioral patterns, language, political and economic interests, history and ancestral geographical base. A political construction created to concentrate power with white people and legitimize dominance over non-white people. A pre-judgment or unjustifiable, and usually negative, attitude of one type of individual or groups toward another group and its members. The unequal treatment of members of various groups based on race, gender, social class, sexual orientation, physical ability, religion and other categories. And it’s illegal…

Evolving Terminology Improve and Know Key concepts and terms Equity Inclusion Structural Racism Racial equity is achieved when a historically marginalized group is given the necessary resources to have the same successful outcomes as the non-marginalized group. The normalization and legitimization of an array of dynamics – historical, cultural, institutional and interpersonal – that routinely advantage Whites while producing cumulative and chronic adverse outcomes for people of color. Authentically bringing traditionally excluded individuals and/or groups into processes, activities, and decision/policy making in a way that shares power.

Structural/Systemic Racism Although groups have significantly different experiences in the United States, all groups viewed as being non-white have been subordinated, excluded, and marginalized, at one time or another, by institutional practices, popular beliefs, and habits that implicitly or explicitly support the dominant narrative. We can also expand this to women and the LGBTQ+ community. Eliminate
