DVCon Presentation Format This template is a guideline for your paper presentation You are not required to use this template If you use your own template, please include the DVCon logo on each page, as in this template In the View menu, select MasterSlide Master Select the DVCon logo in the top right, and copy it Paste it into your slide master You may modify this template to add your company logo In the View menu, select Master-->Slide Master Replace the “Your logo here” box with your logo Change this to reflect your name and company (in the View menu, select “Header and footer” to set this information) <your_name>, <your_company>

Starting the Presentation 1st - talk slow! Unless you are trying to present 75 slides in 25 minutes Nervous speakers have a tendency to speak too fast When you first stand up to speak ... Podium - if you want To the left of the presentation screen Where possible, stand to the left of the presentation People are used to reading from left-to-right People will focus from you (the speaker) to the presentation Out of the way of the front, left-most audience member DON'T STAND BETWEEN THE SCREEN AND THE AUDIENCE!! DON'T TURN YOUR BACK ON THE AUDIENCE!!

Setting Up To Present Clear your walking area Portable microphone Approaching the screen Portable microphone Place it high on the central collar Do not place it on a side-collar Do not place it too low Every screen has at least one leg designed to trip the presenter! Under the chin - it does not have to be in front of your mouth Moving your head from side-to-side should not be the volume control The volume will have to be turned up and feedback is inevitable Now ... back to "Show Time!"

The Conference Support Group You should think of the conference attendees as a big support group The conference attendees aren't looking to catch mistakes The attendees want to learn from your presentation There is one exception If you plan on doing a marketing presentation ... ... then you should think of the conference attendees as a big firing squad!! Learn From Your Audience We give as much as we know and then we learn from the audience what we didn't know NO MARKETING!! Let the introduction market you Then give a killer technical presentation - that will attract people In my papers, I give as much as I know and then I learn from the audience what I didn't know All papers are significant - I did a little paper called "full_case & parallel_case" the evil twins of Verilog Synthesis - my most quoted paper NO MARKETING!! - Let the introduction market you, then give a killer technical presentation that will attract people to you There is one exception - if you plan on doing a marketing presentation, you should think of the conference attendees as a big firing squad!!

Laser Pointers & Use Humor Avoid them or learn to control them Do not point them at your audience Use Humor! The "Tornado-Circling" method It makes some people nervous!  ... you are getting sleepy! ... If you are having fun ... your audience is having fun!

Hands-On Presentation People follow your hands - don't be afraid to use them Hands by your side - one of the best resting positions Crossing arms? No! Giving a prayer? No! It feels awkward but looks normal Grasping hands below your waist? Definitely NOT! Silence is better than "uh" and "um" Silence gives your audience a chance to think It also gives you a chance to think Thinking is good!

Common Presentation Mistakes Speak to the audience Walking back and forth in front of the audience Too many slides the presentation is going long Identify slides you can skip ... not to the screen! You are blocking the view for some audience members Nobody complains about a presentation that ends early! Type in the new slide number and press <enter> Also, keep extra slide page numbers handy 35, 37, 38

Summarizing and Sharing Abbreviate and repeat the significant points Don't summarize the topics Summarize the guidelines Repeat questions before answering What should the audience take away from your presentation? Moderators should help remind the presenter to repeat the question

Summary of Important Guidelines Before presenting, watch those fluids! Speak slow! Stand to the left and out of the way Give a killer introduction NO MARKETING If you must use a laser pointer, control it! If you run long, be prepared to skip slides Summarize important guidelines! Repeat all audience questions before answering them Redundant? Don't worry your ... therapist ... will help remind you Before presenting, for your own comfort - watch those fluids and use the restroom! MODERATOR
