Dialogue Session ENVIRONMENT & CLIMATE CHANGE July 22, 2019 Tonio Sadik July 12, 2019, Slide 1

CONTEXT We are at a crossroads Engagement with the current federal government is ending The post-October 2019 period remains uncertain The climate crisis is only accelerating The Advisory Committee on Climate Action and the Environment (ACE) has been considering priorities for the next few years July 12, 2019, Slide 2

THE CLIMATE CRISIS Our Elders tell us that Mother Earth is in a climate crisis They speak of the changes in species migration, temperature, and irreversible impacts to the land The Pan-Canadian framework (PCF) aims to achieve a 30% reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030 Despite this, Canada’s response remains insufficient, putting us on a pathway to 4ºC of warming A recent national report indicates that Canada’s climate has warmed and will continue to warm at about double the rate of global warming July 12, 2019, Slide 3

A CLIMATE LENS A climate “lens” enables us to see how climate change accelerates existing challenges (eg, biodiversity loss) A healthy environment connects to everything – our health, housing & infrastructure, water, food security, etc We have nothing if our environment is jeopardized Solutions must include First Nations perspectives Biodiversity Infrastructure Language Self-determination Environmental Health Conservation Food Security Culture Housing Health & Wellness Water July 12, 2019, Slide 4

RESOLUTIONS Resolutions drive the AFN’s mandate Environment-focused resolutions at this AGA include: The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Support for the Food, Environment, Health and Nutrition of Children and Youth (FEHNCY) Study Supporting First Nations Guardians Declaring a First Nations Climate Emergency Respecting First Nations inherent and constitutionally-protected rights in the Project List for Bill C-69 July 12, 2019, Slide 5
