What is Photosynthesis? The process of photosynthesis is a series of chemical reactions. It is the most important chemical reaction on our planet!!

What is Photosynthesis, cont. The process of changing (transforming) light energy to chemical energy that is stored in sugars (like GLUCOSE)

What is the equation for the chemical reaction of photosynthesis? Sunlight (ENERGY!) 6CO2+6H2O C6H12O6 + 6O2 Glucose!

Photosynthesis, cont. Requires light energy, CO2, and H2O Takes place in the chloroplasts, using chlorophyll, the green pigment in plants, algae & some bacteria

What happens during photosynthesis? Chlorophyll captures the sun’s energy and uses it to drive the reaction () Carbon dioxide (CO2 ) gas & water (H2O) are converted into sugars like C6H12O6 (organic Carbon) and oxygen gas (O2).

Photosynthesis, cont. The sugars (like glucose) are moved through tubes in the leaf to the roots, stems and fruits of the plants Some of the sugar is used right away by the plant for energy Some is stored as starch and some is built into plant tissue

The RESULT of Photosynthesis & WHY it is important to life on Earth! The energy that was in sunlight was transformed into chemical energy by photosynthesis!! CO2 has been converted to MATTER that we can use as a source of Carbon!

Why is this important to us? Reason 1: We cannot make our own food (glucose) to provide us with energy. Reason 2: We cannot make organic carbon (in molecules like sugars) from CO2 We must get these resources from plants because they are the first step in the food chain (autotrophs; producers).

Why is this important to us? Reason 3: The oxygen released during photosynthesis is necessary for all living things.

What is Cellular Respiration?

What is Cellular Respiration? Series of Chemical Reactions in cells that release & transform the chemical energy in glucose.

Cellular Respiration, cont An organism has to transform the chemical energy in glucose into a form that can be used by the cells (ATP). This process is cellular respiration. It takes place in the mitochondria of both plant and animal cells.

Describe Cellular Respiration Requires Glucose & Oxygen (substrates!) The energy is stored as ATP, the “gasoline” for our cells! Takes place in all living things & is a step by step process

What is the chemical equation for cellular respiration? Glucose C6H12O6+ 6O2 6CO2+6H2O+38ATP Oxygen

Photosynthesis Respiration Where does it occur?(organelle) Why is it important? What is the Substrate? Products? What is the formula? Who does it? (Plant, Animal)
