Student Affairs Office Personnel: The Student Affairs Office employs the following certified personnel: Director of Student Affairs Truancy Officers Discipline Hearing Officer Alternative Education Intake & Exit Specialists Bilingual Paraprofessionals who translate and interpret Spanish and Cambodian for non-English speaking families and students SAO clerical staff CRO clerk

Summary of SAO Major Initiatives Work closely with schools to reduce the number of suspensions and exclusions. Develop a collaboration of services with the A-Venture Alternative Education Program. Link families to outside agencies Student Code of Conduct Policy Student Attendance Policy Conversion of all of the inactive student records housed in the basement of CRO to a digital document imaging system.

SAO ACCOMPLISHMENTS/SUCCESSES Reduce overall number of SAO Student Referrals Increase the number of recipients for the SAO High School Scholarship Program. Establish 2 new Family Truancy Courts at Gilbert Stuart Middle and Central High School. Assist with middle & high school students to gain summer employment opportunities for Student Work Permits. Plan, schedule, and implement SAO staff professional development opportunities.

SAO Work Group Co-Chaired by Kinzel Thomas, Joseph DiPina, and Roxanne Archibald Purpose: to reduce the number of transfers across schools and improve communication between SAO & PPSD schools SAO Work Group members: central administration, school administrators, SAO staff, and school board Work Group met four times: January 23, 2018 February 6, 2018 March 27, 2018 April 24, 2018. Developed a list of recommendations for Superintendent and School Board review.

SAO Work Group Recommendations 1.Creation of Student Affairs Manual 2.Create and Implement School Transfer Slot process Goal: to reduce the number of school-to school transfers for SAO cases Allots a certain number of SAO transfers per school, per year based on school enrollment Provides autonomy to school administrators and more control over student behavior decisions

SAO Work Group Recommendations Provide trainings/workshops for school administrators Develop a team at each school so that when a student is transferred to a new school, there will be a designee (NEW) Revise the District Code of Conduct Policy to remove grade Kindergarten students from being referred to SAO. (NEW) Provide monthly updates to school administrators and Zone Directors regarding school suspensions and SAO referrals. (NEW)

Student Support Presentation SAO Director & The Executive Director for Student Support provided training at the district’s School Leadership Academy (SLA) for school administrators on August 16, 2018. The workshop focused on SAO and the Code of Conduct Policy. Ms. Nkoli Onye, Executive Director for Student Support presented on restorative practices.

NEXT STEPS Moving forward, PPSD will have an annual report of the last year school to expand SAO services and our work together to include additional offices of Social Emotional Learning, Student Support, & Multiple Pathways.
