Community Open Morning 25th June 2019 Crispin Community Open Morning 25th June 2019

Changes to the Curriculum More content at a higher level for both tiers of entry. Students are now required to memorise additional formulae that was previously provided at the front of the exam papers. Greater emphasis has been put on application of mathematics and solving non-routine problems. Some topics have moved from AS level maths to GCSE Higher Level. A grade 9 is now considerably harder to achieve than the old A* award which makes the standard of performance at this new level exceptional. Some topics from Higher level have now been included at the Foundation Level. Some topics are new and been introduced to both at the Higher and Foundation Level. Students now sit 4½ hours of exams split into 3 papers as opposed to previously sitting 3 hours of exams split into 2 papers.

Reasons given for the change To bring the UK GCSE in line with some of the best performing education systems in the world. To ensure students are better prepared for post - 16 study (colleges are having a larger say on the content at GCSE). To enable examiners to more accurately mark out the middle and top performers. To put an end to those students who in the past passed a maths exam by cramming numerous practice papers in at the last minute and simply repeated the techniques learnt on the exam day with little understanding of what they are doing.

Crispin Approach The GCSE syllabus is taught by a team of qualified maths teachers in an era of severe maths staff shortages which is well documented in the media. Setting at different levels of ability to ensure students are in the correct set based on attainment to date which is regularly reviewed. Year 11 Interventions scheduled throughout the week to targeted group of students.
