1. CONCEPT OF MOTIVATION Motivation stimulates individuals action to accomplish desired objectives. It is nothing but an act of inducement. It is an effective instrument in the hands of the management to maximize efficiency of operations.

1. CONCEPT OF MOTIVATION Definitions of Motivation: - According to B. Flippo. “Motivation is the process of attempting to influence other to do their work through the possibility of getting a reward.” Michael J. Jucius also stated that, “ Motivation is an act of stimulating some to get a desired course of action”. On the other hand D.E. Mc farland gives a simple definition, when he says that, “ Motivation relates to those psychological forces which compel employees to act in certain ways”. If we analyze the above definitions, then motivation is considered as one of the most important elements in the directing functional of the management.

2. FEATURES OF MOTIVATION The following features can be observed regarding motivation: - Psychological phenomena: - Motivation is a psychological phenomena which is generated within an individual. It activates an individual to behave in a particular manner. It relates to those factors operating within an individual that compels him to act in a certain way. Inner feeling of individuals: - It is an internal feeling of an individual. It induces individuals in the pursuit of organizational goals. Continuous process: - It is a continuous process as human needs are unlimited. Fulfillment of one set of needs give rise to another sets of needs. This process goes on continuously. Complex process: - It is a complex process as there is no universal theory to motivation.

2. FEATURES OF MOTIVATION Goal-oriented behavior ; Pervasive function ; Varying Degree; Positive and Negative forces; Financial and non-financial benefits; High morale and satisfaction.

3. IMPORTANCE OF MOTIVATION Motivation is the core function of the management. The importance of motivation are given below: Effective use of resources; High efficiency of employees; Healthy industrial relation; Better organizational image; Reduced labour turnover and absenteeism; Accomplishment of organizational goals; Introducing changes in the organization; High morale and satisfaction.

4. FACTORS OF MOTIVATION Monetary incentives; Recognition for good work; Social status; Stability of employment Opportunity for promotion; Job satisfaction; Participation in management; Job enrichment; Healthy competition Post retirement benefits
