The following slides will give you some top tips for revising science! Science Revision Revising for science is tough as it is one of the biggest subject specifications that examines a wide range of content and skills. The following slides will give you some top tips for revising science!

Key Language Science is like its own new language. Ensure that you can give definitions of the keywords for each topic- your knowledge organisers will help with this and your teacher will quiz you on them. Where you are unsure what words mean, try to look for roots in the word to help you work it out and come up with a definition. If you can learn the definitions of the keywords it will help you to understand what the question is about and what you need to do to achieve the marks. For example: Biology- Photosynthesis Chemistry- Thermal decomposition Physics- Non-renewable

Extended Writing Practice Use 6 mark questions to help you assess your understanding of each topic. After you have revised through your chosen methods complete a 6 mark question in a timed space without using your notes. Remember that you should highlight command words and scribble down key words and equations you may need. Use the mark scheme to assess your work looking at the examiner's report also.  If you can score 5 or 6 you have a clear understanding of the topic, 4 or below you may need to do some more revision!

Biology For biology it is essential to practice application to unfamiliar contexts as exam questions will not study every possible example. A great example of this is natural selection where you will study giraffes but in a question you may be asked about another species that you don’t know. This happens commonly in biology- think about the science you know and apply it to the question. The best way to practice this skill is using past paper questions. These can be found on the internet but also there are good examples in your revision guides.

Chemistry In revision for chemistry you should use your top tool as often as possible- the periodic table! This is given in every exam and is a good place to start as it gives basic information for a wide range of topics. Take a periodic table and see how much information you can draw out of it: Examples include- Atomic structure Electron structure Types of bonding Properties of elements Patterns in reactivity Development of the periodic table

Physics Approximately 30% of the physics paper will be based around maths skills including a lot of equations For Physics (and some chemistry!) it is essential that you learn the equations for calculations to allow you to answer the questions - very few equations are given on the equation list! You can use apps such as quizlet to practice matching the correct equations to the quantity that you want to calculate. Make sure you also look at the units that are given as this sometimes will help you to work out the answer for example if an answer is ____m/s you must do distance ( m) / time (s) to get the answer. Use formula triangles to help you with rearranging them.

Required Practicals Through the course of required practicals you have completed in Y9 and Y10 there is a wide range of skills that you need to practice. These include- Hypothesis and variables Planning methods (extended writing) Risk assessments Drawing tables (calculating averages) Drawing graphs Describing and explain patterns in data (including calculations from graphs) Evaluating practicals
