Before We Begin Here is todays… Monday Punday!

When we do a closed reading, we…

Let’s give it a go…you will have to do this on your own in the future

How can you tell if something is matter? POP question time! How can you tell if something is matter?

What are physical properties of matter? A characteristic of a substance that can be observed and measured without changing the identity of the substance. All of your senses can be used to detect physical properties. i.e, Color, shape, size, and texture Common physical properties include: electrical conductivity, density, thermal conductivity, malleability, luster, magnetic attraction, melting point, and boiling point

Can you tell me some physical properties of these items?

What are chemical properties of matter? A chemical property describes a substances ability to change into a new substance with different properties. Common chemical properties include combustibility, and reactivity with substances. An example of this would be iron rusting, silver tarnishing, and the ability for a tomato to ripen

Can you tell me chemical properties of these items?

What are physical changes of matter? A physical change is a change that affects one or more physical properties of a substance Physical changes occur when a substance changes from one form to another. However, the chemical identity of the substance remains the same. The appearance, shape, or size of a substance may be altered during a physical changes Examples include turning wool into a sweater, cutting a piece of cake

What are chemical changes of matter? A chemical change occurs when one or more substance change into entirely new substances with different properties. Be aware that chemical changes are not exactly the same as chemical properties… Burning is a chemical change; combustibility us a chemical property

How can you tell a chemical change has happened? There could be a production of odor Production of gas (fizzing or bubbles) Formation of a precipitate Change in energy (Combustion) Change in color

Law of Conservation of Mass! The law of conservation of mass states that in ordinary chemical and physical changes, mass is not created or destroyed but transformed into different substances. To shorten it up, matter can not be destroyed but it can change form. Example, when vinegar and baking soda combine you see less of the powder because it forms a gas.

Mixtures Pure substances Matter can be either: Mixtures are the physical combination of two or more pure substances. Contain only one kind of particle and are the same throughout.

Can you give me an example of each a pure substance and a mixture? POP question time! Can you give me an example of each a pure substance and a mixture?

2 types of mixtures Homogeneous mixtures Heterogeneous mixtures Components cannot be distinguished from each other, appear as one substance Particles distributed evenly throughout EX: air, salt water, 10 karat gold Heterogeneous mixtures All components of the mixture are visible because they do not mix together Particles not distributed evenly EX: trail mix, vegetable soup, oil and water

Your turn Name these types! Heterogenous or Homogenous.

Now watch this! Just to make sure… https://youtu.be/88MBCyiaPSM

MATTER Heterogeneous mixture Homogeneous Pure Substance No Yes Is it uniform throughout? Heterogeneous mixture Homogeneous No Can it be separated by physical means? yes Pure Substance Homogeneous Mixture (solution) Can it be decomposed into other substance by a chemical process? No yes Compound Element
