Presentation transcript:

Come and See God’s Gifts to You God started this business of giving, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and Only son” (John 3:16).

Scripture: John 1:14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. Echo of Ex. 36:4 - (hesed, emet)

Scripture: John 1: 16-18 From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.

Key Thought: At Christmas, God started the tradition of giving by giving us His Son. And with Him came also the gifts of truth and grace.

The Gift of His One and Only Son. "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 NIV) Isa 9:6 “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given… NIV Lk 2:11 “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.” NIV

The Gift of His One and Only Son. “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given… Isa 9:6 NIV Lk 2:11 “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.” Isa 9:6 “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given… NIV Lk 2:11 “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.”

The Gift of Truth What does truth mean? Real as opposed to mere appearance Fact as opposed to falsehood Root idea – not hidden Three meanings for the word – Real as opposed to a mere appearance real Santa Claus beard grown out for months – as opposed to a fake one paste don that just looked like a beard. Fact as opposed to falsehood. Reflects one Hebrew word - emet – which is often translated truth or faithfulness - - Good English synonym is reliability. root idea - not hidden, or concealed

Jesus Was the Truth In All Three Ways. He was the real picture of what God was like His life and his teachings were the way it really is And he was a revelation of truth previously hidden from human kind. God took everything he ever wanted to say to us and wrapped it up in one person, the baby Jesus.

The Gift of Grace What does grace mean? Favor of God – day of Grace Compassionate mercy of God Gk Charis – “Words formed from the Gk root char indicate things which produce well- being.”

Jesus Brought Grace All 3 Ways Favor of God To men on whom his favor rests Proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor Now is the accepted time Compassion of God pronouncements of forgiveness demonstration of forgiveness That which gives well-being healing ministry “In Acts grace is that power which flows from the exalted Christ” Luke 2:14; Luke 4:19; I Cor. 6:2 last quote from DNTT Vol. 2 p. 119

Always Christmas In C. S. Lewis’ writings, when Narnia is under the authority of the witch, it is “always winter but never Christmas.” That’s the way it is in our lives before we accept God’s gift of his Son who brings to us also truth and grace. After we open our hearts to Jesus, it can be Christmas all year. For God’s Spirit speaks all year of the truths we learn from Jesus and of the grace we receive. In C. S. Lewis’ book, the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, he takes us to the land of Narnia. When Narnia is living under the authority of the witch, it is “always winter but never Christmas.” That’s the way it is in our lives before we accept God’s gift of his Son who brings to us also truth and grace. But after we open our hearts to Jesus, it can be Christmas all year. For his Spirit speaks all year of the truths we learn from Jesus and of the grace of forgiveness we have received.

Merry Christmas
