Introduction – Meeting Employers’ needs Foundation provided by GEAR 2030 (a high level employer view of the EU automotive sector report published in 2017) highlighted the importance of enhanced human capital in meeting the sectors skills needs and ensuring its global competitiveness. Need for an enhanced role for employers in the design and delivery for training in the EU’s automotive sector. Including for current and future skills. Focus on the value of apprenticeships as an impactful way to embed employers into the EU’s training models. Build a better functioning EU apprenticeship market for the auto sector.

Building on recommendations EU forum on automotive apprenticeships to exchange ideas Report on the current apprenticeship marketplace Promote automotive apprenticeship routes Matching tool for talent supply and employer demand Specific recommendations; Build an effective EU apprenticeship market to map talent supply and employer demand Develop the recognition and participation in apprenticeships, including through engagement with current EU bodies such as European Alliance for Apprenticeships (EAfA) Create an EU forum for the exchange of ideas and approaches to apprenticeships Promote a shared understanding of apprenticeships to facilitate the mapping and sharing of good practice Promoting apprenticeships as an attractive route Creating a matching service tool that would facilitate the mobility of apprentices

Work Areas – Linked to recommendations Creating an EU automotive sector apprenticeship forum Understanding the Apprenticeship Marketplace Promoting the Apprenticeship Marketplace Developing an EU wide automotive apprenticeship recruitment tool, including for higher level and degree apprenticeships, to create pipeline of apprentices for future skills

Activities to date Established LinkedIn forum: DRIVES Automotive Apprenticeship Network (DAAN) Opportunity for stakeholders to get involved through our LinkedIn Group, conference and sharing examples of good practice 1st ‘face to face’ DRIVES Apprenticeship forum held in Milan January 2019, including input from Automotive sector employer representatives. Next meeting forum being planned for January 2020. Prominent role in EU apprenticeship groups (including European Alliance for Apprenticeships (EAfA) and conferences Developing an apprentices conference in Spain (early 2020) Initial scoping of a EU wide recruitment tool to support future demand

Activities (continued) Developing a report on the EU automotive apprenticeship market: Identifying the implications of differing apprenticeship models on mobility of labour Highlighting innovative approaches towards apprenticeships specifically within the automotive sector Identify changing skill requirements within the sector and the implications for apprenticeship development Explore wider implications for future apprenticeship development to address changing automotive sector needs Exploring examples of ‘good practice’ in apprenticeships including using the European Framework for Quality and Effective Apprenticeships (EFQEA)
