COLOGNE IS NOT THE SOLUTION! HYGIENE ISSUES TEEN “LIFE SKILLS” COLOGNE IS NOT THE SOLUTION!

Teen and Young Adult Hygiene Being clean and well groomed is an important part of confidence for your school and social life. If your body and breath do NOT smell, your clothes are clean, and you stay on top of your basic personal hygiene; it can help you feel confident with your peers. There are many causes of body odor in teens and young adults. What is noticed most often, and is the cause of body odor are the following; not wearing deodorant, not showering, not changing your socks to clean dry ones, and having shoes that are damp and smelly from wearing them for too long. Shoes need time to dry out.

Keeping clean is an important part of staying healthy Keeping clean is an important part of staying healthy. For example, the simple act of washing hands before eating and after using the toilet is a proven and effective tool for fighting off germs and avoiding sickness. If you have poor hygiene, you may face health consequences. Some are medical; you may be more prone to developing rashes and infections. But equally important, is the fact that you may be judged as unclean and not caring about your own personal self. This gets in the way of jobs and personnel relationships. Top Hygiene Issues: Hormonal changes are one of the biggest causes for body odor in teens (this eventually gets better as you mature.) Sweat and failure to wear deodorant: teens and young adults have plenty of working sweat glands. When puberty hits, the glands become more active and the chemical composition of the sweat changes, causing it to smell stronger. Bad breath can be caused by lack of brushing teeth, smoking, by tooth decay or gum infections due to lack of professional dental maintenance. Dirty clothing can smell: teens and young adults; sometimes may wear the same clothes repeatedly, without washing them. The biggest culprits are shirts, jackets and jeans. Food choices: certain foods and the cooking smells often cling to hair and clothes. If you do not wear clean clothes daily, and bathe daily, these odors will continue to cling to you. Failure to bathe regularly can cause an odor problem. Foot odor: can be caused by unwashed socks or shoes that do not breathe and are worn daily. This does not give your feet a chance to dry out. In addition wearing shoes without socks causes foot odors. Odor from private areas needs to be cleansed daily.

5 Important Hygiene Tips: Showering: Daily showering is essential. It is recommended that you use a mild soap and concentrate on the face, hands, feet, underarms, groin and bottom. Washing your face at least once, if not twice a day is essential in helping to prevent acne. Washing Hair: There are pros and cons of daily hair washing. You may prefer to skip a day or two to prevent your hair from drying out. Some may wash their hair daily if they have oily hair, which can both look greasy and irritate acne. Either way, washing your hair at least once a week, is recommended. Wearing Deodorant: Wearing deodorant is an important routine that you should be remembering on a daily basis. Everyone sweats, and it is perfectly normal; however you may not be aware of how much you sweat. A lot of bodies smell (body odor or BO) comes from the bacteria feeding on the oils in sweat under the arms or groin area. This sweat gets onto the clothes we wear and if we don't wash and wear deodorant, the smell can get stronger. Therefore wearing deodorant and showering are equally as important. Wear Clean Clothes Regularly: If you wash your body and wear clean clothes regularly, especially after physical activity, it will help to reduce the build-up of bacteria and avoid Body Odor. Changing underwear is especially important because underwear collects all sorts of bacteria in our bodies, including dead skin cells, sweat and body fluids, which causes body odor. Maintaining Good Oral Health: Sometimes brushing your teeth is the last thing you might think of at night and in the morning; but it is important for your health and social life. We usually sleep with our mouths closed, which can lead to bad breath. Sugary foods can cause tooth decay, which causes bad breath. Bad oral hygiene leads to bad breath -- and that's something that no one wants.

ADDITIONAL HYGIENE TIPS When showering make sure to also focus on the armpits and feet with antibacterial deodorant soap. Showering after sweaty activities is an important part of staying clean. Remember that washing your face every day, morning and night helps to keep acne in control. The “T” zone on your face is where most of the oil on your face is produced. Using a mild acne cleanser is recommended. Shave safely- wet the skin and hair, apply shaving cream, then lightly drag the razor across the skin. When buying deodorant, remember that there are also antiperspirants. Deodorant covers up the smell, while antiperspirants stop the perspiration from happening. Since many products actually include both antiperspirant and deodorant ingredients, it may work to buy one product with both. It's really an issue of personal choice. Decide based on your personal needs. First, consider which sweat side effect you want to deal with: the wetness or the smell - or both? Choose your preferred scent, or lack of scent, and consider how you like a product to feel when you put it on - do you prefer wet or dry? Options exist for sensitive skin, and there are also a variety of natural, aluminum-free alternatives, like the ones made from mineral salt crystals. Keep your nails trimmed and clean. Trim you nails straight across to prevent ingrown nails.
