World War II Fort Campbell (US 68) The camp itself, was built in Tennessee in 1942. It would become the home of the 12th, 14th, and 20th Armored Divisions. It was the HQ for the IV Armored Corps and the 26th Infantry Division. Today, it is home to the 101st Airborne.

“Letter to President Franklin Roosevelt” by Albert Einstein In 1939, Albert Einstein wrote FDR a letter regarding atomic weapons. He told FDR that the Germans were already trying to build these weapons. He urged the administration to begin governmental work developing an atomic bomb with funding from our government.

World War II Manhattan Project (US 69) A research and development project that produced the first atomic bomb. The scientific director was J. Robert Oppenheimer.

Manhattan Project Employed more than 130,000 people. Two types of atomic bomb were created: uranium and plutonium. Much of this work was done at Oak Ridge.

Manhattan Project pros and cons (US 69) Pros: 1. The war had been long and costly. 2. Losing tens or hundreds of thousands more soldiers attempting a mainland invasion. 3. Wanted to intimidate the Soviets. 4.Dampen the possibility of future wars.

Manhattan Project pros and cons (US 69) Cons: 1. Worldwide disgust. 2. Japan would surrender anyway.

“Announcement of Dropping the Atomic Bomb” by Harry Truman https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3Ib4wTq0jY We dropped a top secret bomb on Japan. Massive destruction occurred. This was in part retribution for Pearl Harbor. We have been in a race with Germany to develop this weapon. We have had secret labs in the US employing more than 100,000 people, where few knew what was being worked on. Japan must surrender or face more atomic bombs.
