Curriculum Studies - Session 1 What’s the link? Curriculum Education Schooling Pedagogy Syllabus Knowledge Can you map these? Curriculum Studies - Session 1

Curriculum Studies - Session 1 The … Curriculum … Explicit … … Implicit/Hidden … … Null … … Extra/Co … … Academic … … Pastoral … Curriculum Studies - Session 1

The school curriculum… “All the learning which is planned or guided by the school, whether it is carried on in groups or individually inside or outside the school – i.e. activities do not have to occur in time- tabled time to become part of the curriculum. Extra-curricula activities are a legitimate part of the curriculum.” Kerr, 1967 Curriculum Studies - Session 1

Curriculum Studies - Session 1 The ‘official’ view “A school’s curriculum consists of all those activities designed or encouraged within its organisational framework to promote the intellectual, personal, social and physical development of its pupils. It includes not only the formal programme of lessons, but also the ‘informal’ programme of so-called extracurricular activities as well as all those features which produce the school’s ‘ethos’, such as the quality of relationships, the concern for equality of opportunity, the values exemplified in the way the school sets about its task and the way in which it is organised and managed. Teaching and learning styles strongly influence the curriculum and in practice they cannot be separated from it. Since pupils learn from all these things, it needs to be ensured that all are consistent in supporting the schools intentions.” DES, 1985 Curriculum Studies - Session 1

A different perspective … “curriculum is a selection from the culture of the society” Lawton, 1984 Curriculum Studies - Session 1

Curriculum Studies - Session 1 And another… “what schools and individual teachers choose to do in their encounters with children” Daresh, 2007 Curriculum Studies - Session 1

Curriculum Studies - Session 1 And another… “A curriculum is an attempt to communicate the essential principles and features of an educational proposal in such a form that it is open to critical scrutiny and capable of effective translation into practice” Stenhouse, 1975 Curriculum Studies - Session 1

What’s your definition? Consider the definitions in the extract from Marsh where he presents several (perhaps increasingly radical) views. Think about each and consider the attractiveness or otherwise to different stakeholder groups. Curriculum Studies - Session 1

Curriculum Studies - Session 3 The IB Learner Profile What is it? Is it a curriculum? If you are in an IB school, how do you ‘accommodate’ it? If you were taking this as the starting point for your curriculum, how might you use it? Curriculum Studies - Session 3
