What OSHA doesn’t cover… HR Made me Do it! What OSHA doesn’t cover…

Who is HR?

HR Made Me Do What? Ask, “Are my People Safe?” Think about what keeping them safe means? Ask, “Are we doing what is required or what is right?”

Why is HR making me do this? Manager, worker killed in shooting at Cummins facility An intern on his first day was among the victims of the Aurora, Illinois, mass shooting Gunman opened fire after being told he was losing job, police say Gunman in courthouse shooting that injured 4 was scheduled for assault hearing Surveillance video offers little help in fatal courthouse shooting Employee shot dead in Pennsylvania municipal building Pennsylvania – person shot was the sewage enforcement and building code officer. Told police “ I don’t know why I did it.”

Are My people safe? How many of you have offices that look like this? How many of you have a picture of what your office looks like on your website? How many of you have a procedure for taking deposits to the bank vs. Patty does it on Tuesday? Natural and man made threats can put your most valuable assets at risk.

Are my people safe? Where is everyone? Meter readers Maintenance Techs Grounds Crew Water Plant Utilities Office

Are my people safe? Threat assessments Identify the types of threats you face. Criminal Intent No relationship with perpetrator. Customer/Client Worker-to-Worker Domestic Violence Ideological Violence Violence against the organization Conduct an assessment of each threat. How can we reduce the risks. What can we do to prevent? Threat Management Plan How do we control or contain a situation? How do we protect potential targets? Primary purpose is to prevent targeted violence. Assess Potential Situations and threats. Identify people who will need help. Identify people who can help. Make a plan for how to account for all of your people, get them to safety, and keep them safe.

What goes in to the Plan? General Precautions General Evacuation Emergency Contact Information and Emergency Assembly Points Emergency Shelter in Place Floods Tornadoes Earthquakes Fire Power Failure

What goes in to the plan? Robbery Hostage Situations Hostile Behavior/ Violence - Dealing with Angry Individuals Pandemic Influenza Suspicious Objects Hostile Visitors Code Alerts Active Shooters Differences for Multiple Locations

What Scares HR the most? Robbery Hostage situations How much money do you have onsite? How do you get that money to the bank? Who knows you have money? Is that money accessible by front line employees? Can customers get behind the counter? How secure are the customers once behind the counter? Can an employee get out if an intruder gets in?

What Scares HR the most? Active Shooters Hostile behavior and violence Do you have a clear line of sight to the front door? Is there a secondary way to exit? Have you educated your employees on what to do? Do you have a panic button or direct line to 911? How do you deescalate a situation? Who is the point person? Who is the backup? Who do you call when the ask to speak to your boss? How can you resolve it quickly?

What scares hr the most? Mobile Worker Safety How do you get messages to them? How do you find them? Do they face the same threats as office folks? What do they do if confronted while shutting off service?

What should you do now? Find out if the county/city has any general plans already. Identify who can help you update any existing plans to fit your locations needs. Identify who can help you write new plans if necessary. Distribute and explain information to employees in an informal and open dialogue. Remind people often about the dangers of workplace violence.
