Aim: How did the Constitutional Convention address the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation? Do Now: Define the word: COMPROMISE Describe a time in your life where you had to make a compromise . Homework: Quiz Monday (Articles of Confederation and Constitutional Convention)

Define the word: COMPROMISE Compromise: an agreement or a settlement of a dispute that is reached by each side making concessions Describe a time in your life where you had to make a compromise .

What was the Conflict about? The Great Compromise – Solution Representation in Congress Virginia Plan (Large States) Representation based on population in two house legislature Three Branches of government New Jersey Plan (Small States) Representation equal for each state in a one house legislature Three Branches of government The Great Compromise – Solution Bicameral Legislature (Two Houses) House of Representatives based on population Senate would be equal number for each state

The Three-Fifth Compromise – Solution The Conflict What was the Conflict about? Should Slaves Count Towards Representation Northern States View Slaves had no rights of citizenship, including voting and should not count Southern States View Wanted slaves to count towards representation to have more representation in Congress The Three-Fifth Compromise – Solution Count three-fifths of slaves in a state’s population (Every 5 slaves would count as 3 towards population)

Should the Slave Trade Continue Northern States View Already outlawed slavery Wanted slave trade to end Southern States View Slave trade was important to their agricultural economy The Slave Trade Compromise – Solution Slave trade would continue until 1808

Discussion Questions: Explain how the Great Compromise satisfied both the large and small states: The Great Compromise settled the method of representation in the legislative branch (Congress). Under the compromise, all states were represented equally in the Senate. This made the smaller states happy. In the House of Representatives, representation was based on population. This pleased the bigger states.

Discussion Questions: Identify and describe two compromises the North and South made involving slavery: Three-fifth Compromise – 3 out of every 5 slaves would count towards a states population for representation and taxation. Slave Trade Compromise – North wanted to stop the importation of slaves and the South wanted to continue the importation of slaves – they agreed the slave trade would end in 1808. (20 Years)

Discussion Questions: Why do you think there was such a difference in opinion between the North and South over slavery? North and South had different views on slavery because of their geography. The South had large plantations and free labor was the cornerstone of their economy.

Discussion Questions: Which of the three compromises do you believe was the best at satisfying what both sides wanted? Why?
