Humanism vs. The Church

Humanism *Humanism is the belief that the ideal man has beauty, wealth, and dignity. *Therefore, life should be cherished rather than endured. *Humanism developed as the church declined.

Humanism *The decline happened for two reasons: 1. The carnage of the black death, and the church’s inability to explain or stop the suffering led many to look for answers outside the church. 2. The rise of the market economy, which replaced feudalism and freed individuals from serfdom. - This allowed the freed people to make money, grow, and think on their own.

Humanism *Humanist believe people were no longer seen as tools for the wealthy, but as individuals created by God with their own unique gifts and talents.

Humanism *Man is the center of all things not the church.
