Earth’s Atmosphere Chapter 1

6.E.2A.1 Develop and use models to exemplify the properties of the atmosphere (including the gases, temperature and pressure differences, and altitude changes) and the relative scale in relation to the size of Earth.

Earth’s Atmosphere is made up of a thing layer of gases, which surround the entire planet. Two gases- nitrogen and oxygen- make up 99% of it.

The most abundant gas in the atmosphere is nitrogen, which makes up about 78% of our atmosphere. Nearly 21% of the atmosphere is comprised of oxygen. The remaining 1% is our atmosphere includes trace gases, or gases found in small amounts, and aerosols.

Carbon dioxide, methane, argon, and water vapor are examples of trace gases. Aerosols include tiny particles of substances such as dust, pollen, ash, salt crystals, and pollutants.

Without the atmosphere, Earth as we know it would be very different Without the atmosphere, Earth as we know it would be very different. The atmosphere is essential for life because it: Protects us from the Sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation (UV waves) Acts as an insulating blanket, trapping enough heat to keep Earth’s temperatures comfortably warm. Provides oxygen that living things need to breathe. Shields us from incoming celestial bodies, or objects from space

The atmosphere extends for many miles above Earth’s surface, but is held close to Earth because of gravity. While there isn’t a clear line that marks the end of our atmosphere and the beginning of outer space, there are many changes that occur as you move up the atmosphere.

All weather that we experience results from changes in the atmosphere. Most people refer to Earth’s atmosphere as air.
