Describing & Defending History and Rationale of Rules “History, Rationale and Application of the Regulations of HS Athletics in Michigan” MHSAA.com MHSAA Library Why do ADs need to know the rules?

Why do we have that rule? What is the history that the rule was written to change? What if the rule did not exist? What if the rule applied only to better athletes? What if the rule applied only to one set of schools like non-public or charter or public? What would eliminating this rule possibly lead to in the future? What is universal application?

Enrollment - What makes a student a student (…who can play sports)? All students on your teams are receiving active credit in 66% (50% middle school) on the transcript of the school they play for. Home school - Early & Middle Colleges Online learning - Virtual Academies Nearby school without sports The school determines that for which it gives credit. Also received 66 in the previous academic term. OR list and count the program as a non-traditional school (alternative ed.) on enrollment declaration form the previous February.

Early Colleges, Middle Colleges, Dual Enrolled International Baccalaureates Two paths to eligibility Every student in school sports gets active credit on the transcript of the school they play for in 66%. (P. 26 Reg. I, Section 1 (A) 3.) Active credit = Courses awaiting grades for credit. Or: Count base original school students and name the program as a non-traditional on Enrollment Declaration Form (previous Feb. for coming year). (P. 34-35, Int. 48 Eligibility at base school) * Base- Original School: School of residence or school from whence you came. Transfer rule still applies.

All the rules, all the time, all students Even if grad requirements are met, 12th graders must be enrolled in 66% to play. (P. 32, Sect. 6) Still must achieve a previous semester record Reduction allowed to 50% (P. 34 Int. 46 Note 2) for approved college courses or off site classes. Still must meet regular academic eligibly checks May not coincide with college grade reporting or your school recording system: Special paper checks may be necessary. Synchronize college “credit hours” with high school courses. Contact Tom R. if you need more.

Maximum Enrollment (4) and Competition (5) Columns 5 and 6 on the Eligibility Lists Once a student begins the 9th grade: Eight Semesters or Twelve Trimesters total Four 1st semesters/trimesters Four 2nd semesters/trimesters Four 3rd trimesters 7th & 8th semesters or 10-11-12th trimesters must be consecutive – no break in enrollment Terms count whether student plays sports or not. Terms do not count if the student withdraws before a 4th Friday and does not play in a scrimmage or game. Terms do count if student gets in a scrimmage / game

Undergraduate Standing Regulation I, Section 6 Student may not be a graduate (US or foreign) May not accept a GED May complete the requirements for graduation early but must continue to be enrolled in 66% 1st semester or 1st or 2nd trimester graduates ineligible on first day of next term. 2nd semester or 3rd trimester graduates ineligible at end of regular season or MHSAA tournament which- ever is later

Two Academic Eligibility Rules MHSAA Minimums PREVIOUS ACADEMIC CREDIT RECORD MHSAA Minimum Standard Successfully carrying credit for 66% (HS) and 50% (JRH/MS) of full credit load potential for a full time student. 3 of 4 4 of 5 4 of 6 5 of 7 (See Int. 46) Help calculating potential? (Interpretations 41 & 46) Most schools use a tougher standard GPA, Passing all classes or more classes. Period of ineligibility for failing previous term: Trimester or 60 scheduled school days in semester schools or until deficiency is made up (summer school, on-line, credit recovery if accepted by school)

Progress report time; weekly list Two Academic Eligibility Rules MHSAA Minimums CURRENT ACADEMIC CREDIT RECORD Academic Eligibility Checks of not less than 10 weeks are required for semester schools, 7 weeks for trimester schools: Most schools check more frequently Progress report time; weekly list Ineligible for competition until passing 66% (HS) 50% (JRH/MS) but at least the next Monday to Sunday.

The Transfer Rule- See Residency Check List Residential Changes must be FULL & COMPLETE which means: All the people the student lived with ( Int. 65) All the proofs and all the stuff (Int. 77) Former residence vacant, sold or rented to non-family. From one district into another district No one may return to occupy former residence (Int. 75) Tips for ADs – Watch the nearby ones, watch the sports ones, contact the other AD.
