Burnout Burnout is common among health care professionals with rates ranging from 25% to 80%  53% of health system pharmacists assessed reported a high degree of burnout in one subscale of the MBI-HSS emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment 60% of clinical pharmacists in the US reported being burned out. (Arch Intern Med 2012;172[18]:1377-1385; Int J Nurs Stud 2015;52[1]:240-249 Hosp Pharm 2017;52[11]:742-751). significant risk factors did emerge from the previous study of health-system pharmacists, including practice at a large hospital, five or fewer years in practice, and no availability or a lack of awareness of resources for burnout or resiliency. Only 14.5% of survey respondents reported being aware of any resources for burnout available at their institution. https://www.pharmacypracticenews.com/Operations-and-Management/Article/03-19/Battling-Burnout-Nearly-Two-Thirds-of-Pharmacists-Say-They-re-Vulnerable/54260?sub=31D69684AEB1E89FB835F42F5E7AFCABF2EB378D903AF6B27750490CC64ED30&enl=true&dgid=--DGID--&utm_source=enl&utm_content=3&utm_campaign=20190304&utm_medium=title Mary E. Ball, Evidence of burnout in health-system pharmacists, American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy, Volume 75, Issue 23_Supplement_4, 1 December 2018, Pages S93–S100, https://doi.org/10.2146/ajhp170818 Of the 371 survey responses received, 329 were complete and included in the final analysis. Overall, 175 study participants (53.2%) reported scores indicating a high degree of burnout on at least 1 subscale of the MBI-HSS. Twenty-eight respondents (8.5%) had scores indicating burnout on all 3 subscales. Average scores were 22.9, 6.2, and 36.3 for feelings of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment, respectively. Modifiable and nonmodifiable risk factors for burnout were identified. The findings warrant further research on burnout prevention and action to promote resilience in the profession.
