Welcome Graduating Class of 2017

High School 101 Tonight’s Parent Night: What to know as you get your enrollment packets Help prepare your student to make good choices about classes Expectations Answer questions

Diploma Choices Students have three choices Know the requirements Honors Diploma Advanced Diploma Standard Diploma Know the requirements Fine Arts Foreign Language

Honors Diploma Requirements Successfully complete a minimum of 6 honor/AP credits with 4 of the 6 credits taken during junior/senior year AND Maintain a core point average of 3.0 or rank in the upper 25% of the class at the end of 7 semesters AND Obtain a score of EXCEEDS on at least 2 of the state mandated tests (AIMS). An Honors Diploma indicates the student has met the prerequisites for entering any one of Arizona’s three state universities. Course of Study 4 English 1 Fine Arts 4 Math 2 Foreign Language 3 Science 1 Physical Ed. 3 Social Studies 6 Electives Total Credits - 24

MOST Honors classes will have a summer assignment Freshman level Honors classes Teacher recommendations for Honors classes are needed Math – earn 2 math credits in one year Science – Honors Thinking Science or Honors Biology (Honors Bio students must be enrolled in Honors English and Honors Math) English – Honors English 1-2 MOST Honors classes will have a summer assignment

Take the challenge!!! Most AP courses offer dual enrollment credit Competitive colleges consider the “rigor of your courses” when determining admission and scholarship opportunities Honors and AP courses award bonus points that have a positive impact on class rank

Special Services All IEP’s will be electronically transferred from the feeder school to the Glendale Union High School District Office and then given to the appropriate school If there is a spring IEP the High School will be invited to the IEP meeting at the 8th grade Model: Service is based on the disability Direct instruction in the disability area: for example; literacy, math, behavior…

ECAP – Education & Career Action Plan All freshman and their parent(s)/guardian will be invited to attend an ECAP meeting Components Personal/Social Academic Career Planning Extra-curricular Post-secondary Planning

GRADES A: 90 - 100, B: 80 - 89, C: 70 – 79, D: 60 - 69, F: 0 – 59 Grades are only added to the transcript at the end of each semester (i.e. December & May) You will receive a progress/grade report each quarter. 8th Hour Required Study Hour for all freshmen failing at least one class 8th hour has an attendance policy as there are consequence for non-attendance Late bus available

Progress in Classes If a student fails a required class, that credit must be made up Students must be passing ALL classes in order to participate in sports Summer School and Night School are available online and summer classes through the traditional classroom setting Cost: $150 per semester class Summer and Night classes are designed for credit recovery and require the same amount of work as a regular on-campus class

The Learning Center (Title I) This is a great place for students to get tutoring and help in their classes Free morning and after school snacks! Teachers and Aides are available both before school and after school Late Bus Available

Attendance Policy Parents/Guardians will be notified when a student reaches 5 absences/tardies in any class period by mail. At 8 absences/tardies there is another notification and the student will be placed on Academic Probation. Students are allowed a combination of 12 absences and/or tardies (per semester) before loss of credit eligibility.

Tardy Policy Students are expected to be in class prepared to work when the bell rings Tardy students will be sent to Sweeps and then back to class. Exemptions: Only with documentation from staff, a doctor, dentist, or court.

Transfer Request (Variance) Must begin at home school Must meet variance request requirements: Fewer than 7 absences in the prior semester Good disciplinary record Good academic standing/8th grade promotion Forms available in attendance office at home school and will be accepted for screening beginning January 7th. No bus transportation is provided

Enrollment Packets Packets will be handed out prior to Jan. 17th Please complete both pages; all areas Complete all inserts Please include copies of a birth certificate and immunization records Sign Return to Desert Foothills Counselors will work with students on January 24th

Take Note Requests for changes in the following areas cannot be accommodated: Elective classes Lunch hour Teachers Hour of the day

Other Information School Hours First class starts at 8:00 a.m. and school is dismissed at 2:35. Business Hours Main office: 7:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Counseling office: M – Th. 7:00 a.m. until 4:00 P.M. (Friday 3:30 p.m.) Lunch We have 2 lunch hours 35 minutes long. We do offer Free and Reduced Lunch to families that qualify.
