Presentation transcript:

The Green Church Project Finding ways to be better stewards of all of our resources Do you have used household batteries (A, AA, AAA, C, D, 9-volt, etc.) to dispose of? Don’t throw them in the trash. Place them in the container on the credenza in Becker Hall for safe disposal by the Green Team.

The Green Church Project Finding ways to be better stewards of all of our resources What does the Energy Star emblem mean? ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy helping us all save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices. Look for the emblem when purchasing products or materials for your home.

The Green Church Project Finding ways to be better stewards of all of our resources Why should I buy CFL light bulbs? They use 2/3 less energy to produce the same amount of light. They last 10 times longer. They generate 70% less heat.

The Green Church Project Finding ways to be better stewards of all of our resources How much money can I save by switching from incandescent light bulbs to CFLs? Each CFL you use will save you $30 in energy costs over the life of the bulb.

The Green Church Project Finding ways to be better stewards of all of our resources If every household in the U.S. replaced just one regular incandescent light bulb with a CFL bulb, it would prevent 90 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions from power plants, the equivalent of taking 7.5 million cars off the road!!! CFL

The Green Church Project Finding ways to be better stewards of all of our resources When a CFL bulb burns out, can I throw it in with my regular trash? No! Lowe’s has a recycle container near customer service for safe recycling of CFLs.

The Green Church Project Finding ways to be better stewards of all of our resources Why should I use LED lights where possible? LEDs last 60 times longer than incandescents and 10 times longer than CFLs. They don’t generate as much heat as other bulbs.

The Green Church Project Finding ways to be better stewards of all of our resources What non-food-related things does the AARP Recycle Center accept? Office waste, envelopes, paper Catalogs, magazines, newspapers, books Cardboard, pasteboard boxes Cloth, worn out clothing or fabric

The Green Church Project Finding ways to be better stewards of all of our resources What does the number inside the triangle on the bottom of plastic items mean? It identifies the kind of plastic the item is made of. Our Recycle Center only accepts items numbered 1 or 2.

The Green Church Project Finding ways to be better stewards of all of our resources What kinds of glass will the AARP Recycle Center accept? Bottle and jars but not dishes or glassware.

The Green Church Project Finding ways to be better stewards of all of our resources Keep reusable shopping bags in the trunk of your car and use them instead of bringing home more plastic bags.

The Green Church Project Finding ways to be better stewards of all of our resources What items does the AARP Recycle Center NOT accept? Dishes and glassware Styrofoam Plastics other than those numbered 1 or 2 Cartons from soda or beer (because of the glue)

The Green Church Project Finding ways to be better stewards of all of our resources Do you need to replace strings of lights for your Christmas decorations? Consider switching to LED lights which cost far less to use and are more environmentally friendly.

The Green Church Project Finding ways to be better stewards of all of our resources Give gifts this year that can be consumed or put to practical use. Food items Candles Items made from recycled materials

The Green Church Project Finding ways to be better stewards of all of our resources It’s Christmas gift time. Do you really need anything more to eat, wear or add to your home this year? Consider giving a gift to a charity such as the Heifer Project in honor of your loved ones and encourage them to do the same in lieu of gifts this year. www.heifer.org
