Why Active Learning? Classroom approaches that engage students actively have been shown to increase retention of information build critical thinking skills induce more positive attitudes toward STEM disciplines increase retention of students in STEM majors Diverse methods that engage students in ‘active learning’ have been successfully implemented in a large range of classroom sizes and can be done with an increase, not a decrease, in coverage of content. Engage to Excel, PCAST, p. 17
Why Active Learning? Integrating simulation strategies can lead to an effective learning paradigm enriched brain chemistry significant improvements in the learning outcomes and cognition while also preparing students to make decisions in extreme and complex environments or situations… Barjis, et al, ; Interdisciplinary Journal of Information, Knowledge and Management, 2012, p. 28

Faculty Training
Faculty Training – Some Responses The best aspect of this training was learning all of the operational aspects of the unit and being sure everyone (faculty) had consensus on the operating procedures. The DTU-1 System is flexible and robust. I can use it to demonstrate by example. We need better drawings to utilize this equipment better. I enjoyed the informed discussions we had of the operation of the unit There were great examples on usage, this was a hands-on experience This software can be applied to my existing courses. I would like more practice with it.
