Thank you for making Amazing Earth possible! Updated 10/1/19

What do ants, people, plants and animals need to live? ASK: Ants, people, plants and animals need 5 things to live. Can you guess what they are? ADVANCE to reveal images: Water Food Air Space to Grow Shelter

ants help the earth Ants add air to the soil by digging tunnels. How do the tunnels help the Earth? The tunnels allow water and nutrients to reach plant roots which helps plants grow.

Ants are strong Ants are very, very strong. They can lift things that are 20 times heavier than they are! That’s like your mom or dad being able to lift up a car!

Body Three main body parts Six legs Taste, touch and smell with their antenna ”Hear" by feeling vibrations in the ground through their feet Breath through tiny holes all over their body Only the queen and males have wings Ants ”talk” to each other by touching their antennas

Cool facts about ants Ants are very social and work together as a team. Ants leave special scents as they walk around. When an ant finds food it leaves a smell as it walks back to the colony. The other worker ants line up and follow the smell back to the food. Amazing! Ants live everywhere in the world except in ANTarctica, which is funny given the name! . Explain: a special scent is a smell, like a perfume

Let’s Play the Community Game SAY: We talked about how ants live in a community and they all work together as a team. We are a community at Sunrise Valley too. There are lots of people here who have jobs to take care of this “colony,” your school. SAY: Let’s play the community game. I’ll show you a picture of someone and you raise your hand and tell me either who the person is and/or what type of job they have ADVANCE to reveal images: After students guess, if needed, help make the connection to the ant jobs: Cafeteria, Ms. Lopez, Ms. Langolis and Ms. Kim – food workers Ms. Sandy – nurse, she cares for all the students Ms. Elizabeth and Ms. Juana – they take care of the school, clean it, help build and maintain it Students from the school’s Safety Patrol – they help protect and keep the students safe Mr. West, the principal - he oversees the whole colony

Ant activities First Activity Next Activities – Break Into Two Groups Everyone makes a clay ant with the 3 body parts Next Activities – Break Into Two Groups Explain quickly while students are seated on the carpet that for the first activity everyone will go back to their desk. After they make their clay ants, then they will split into two groups for the next activity.
