Zohre Mohamadi (Ph.D) Five Paragraph Essay

Components of an Essay An introduction 1. A motivator 2. Transition 3. Thesis statement with blueprints Body 1. Central Paragraph 1 2. Central Paragraph 2 3. Central Paragraph 3 Conclusion 1. rewording the thesis statement 2. clincher

Introduction Goals: 1. It gets the readers 'attention (Motivator) 2. It tells the readers what the main idea is (thesis statement with blueprints Types of motivator 1. The opposite opinion 2. A Brief story 3. An interesting statement

The opposite view Some people think that smoking makes them appear sophisticated and mysterious, perhaps even seductive. They become Humphery Bogart in Casablanca in Lauren Bacall in to have and have not. Those people, however, are wrong. As far as I am concerned, smoking is really a disgusting habit messy, irritating to others, and even harmful to nonsmokers

The opposite view As I was walking down the hall yesterday, I overheard a professor complaining about computer: “ those things are going to ruin the writing of our students. A computer is just a fancified up TV and arcade game disguised as an educational tool”. But my experience with computers is entirely different. As word processors, for example, they can be immediately helpful with each stage of the writing process: prewriting, writing, and rewriting

a brief story I walked into living room, picked up a magazine and settled back into my recliner, when I opened the cover, I was confronted by a sensuous blond slinking toward me, her eyes starting into mine. “ I like a Marlboro Man”. She seemed to whisper provocatively. Believe me, I was ready to start smoking. I never did, though, because Marlboro men notwithstanding I have always thought of smoking as a disgusting habit: messy, irritating to others and even harmful to nonsmokers

Interesting statement I am sick of smokers flicking ashes on my desk and throwing ashes on the rug, long after these people have left, their “ droping” remain, together with the foul smoke they have exhaled from their tar-coated lungs. Lets face facts: smoking is a disgusting habit- messy, irritating, and even harmful to nonsmokers

Thesis statement with blueprints : 1. The main idea ( thesis statement) 2. The outline of your support (blueprint) Thesis statement is the main idea of the five paragraph essay, the single idea your entire essay will support Blueprint: blue print is a summary of the main points you are about to present in the body of your paper. Blueprints answer “ why”, “how” and “ when”

Why do vegetables take a lot of planning? because the soil needs to be prepared, because the vegetables need to be planted at the right times, and because the fertilizing must be done in schedule How does Wanda distract you? By singing, eating and talking as I try to study when is your classmate constantly sleepy? When he gets up in the morning, sits in class, or studies in the evening

Central Paragraphs like a topic sentence for a one paragraph essay, the topic sentence for a central paragraph presents the main idea of the paragraph. However, the central paragraph has two additions – a transition from the preceding paragraph and a reminder of the thesis. 1. transition (provides theme coherence) 2. reminder of the thesis (helps to fit the central paragraph’s main idea to the theme’s main idea) 3. topic sentence ( the main idea of a paragraph)

Conclusion Goals: 1. it reminds the readers of the main point of the essay (rewording the thesis statement) 2. it gives them a sense of finality (clincher) rewording the thesis statement is like rewording the topic sentence) types of clincher 1. The reference to the motivator 2. An interesting statement
