Problems Being Solved Heart Disease Left-Sided Heart Failure Systolic Failure Diastolic Failure Right-Sided Failure Congestive Heart Failure

Types of Artificial Hearts Total Artificial Heart Implanted after the natural heart is removed Ventricular Assist Device Implanted to assist the natural heart.

AbioCor (Total Artificial Heart) Developed by AbioMed Corporation in Massachusetts Uses advancements in miniaturization, biosensors, plastics, and batteries to reduce the size of the device to be internally implanted into the thoracic cavity. Uses transcutaneous energy transmission to charge the batteries. Reduces the risk of infections due to the lack of wires Artificial Septum Separates the artificial ventricles Provides the energy to pump blood throughout the device and the body.

SynCardia (Ventricular Assist Device) Patients suffering from ventricular failure who are waiting on a donor heart. Procedure: Remove failing left and right ventricles Remove all four heart valves Attach connections to the atria, aorta, and pulmonary artery SynCardia temporary Total Artificial Heart is implanted and attached to the connections Functions as the new left and right ventricles Stays implanted until donor heart is available Connected to Freedom Driver System

Results AbioCor SynCardia Went from 20% chance of living 30 days to living extra 512 days (One Clinical Trial) SynCardia 1,352 implants (96% of all artificial heart implants) 79% of patients successfully bridged between waiting period for artificial heart Longest Survival Rate (1,374 days prior to successful heart transplate)

Limitations AbioCor SynCardia Too Big Only considered Humanitarian Device Exemption by FDA Cost $75,000-$100,000 $350,000 after surgery SynCardia Not a permanent solution Must remain attached to external machines $125,000 $350,000-$400,000 after surgery

Future Reduce size of the devices Extend the life of devices AbioCor II Extend the life of devices Reduce cost of devices and surgeries Remove all external devices Make devices a permanent option instead of humanitarian option or bridge until surgery.
